[Eiron, SSS members on Zel’s Ship]
{Zel’s Ship}
As the ship stabilized its flight, Eiron nodded to Professor E. Gadd. “Alright.” He said, taking a breath. “Let’s rock.”
He moved into the center of the room where the ominous red portal had once swirled. A peculiar tingling sensation gripped his stomach, as if some of the stormy energy still lingered there, threatening to drag him into his crimson embrace. The hushed conversations around the room quieted, and Eiron slowly felt the eyes of all those assembled etch their marks upon him. For a moment, a deafening silence gripped the bridge. Then Eiron spoke.
“Ladies, Gentlemen,” he began, slowly, “fellow warriors, fighters, Saviors. My name is Eiron, and I come before you as a stranger, a humble outsider who can only wonder in awe at the heroes that I now stand among.”
He paused, letting the words come to him. Once again, silence gripped the room, and once again, Eiron broke it.
“I, a foreigner in this land of champions, have found myself in the singular position of being tasked with directing our operations at our new headquarters. Dobs has vouched for me, but I would be judged by another man’s words.” He closed his eyes, allowing the reverberating silence to engulf him, the unwavering gaze of the crowd to burn ever hotter.
“So,” he continued, his eyes flashing open, his voice stronger. “Judge me by my words, and when the time comes, judge me by my actions.”
The swirling skies of Elysia suddenly filled the center of the room as the hologram projectors activated, displaying the floating city Skytown below. “As Dobs explained, Skytown will act as the nexus of our operations. The city can be moved to any location on the planet, and the atmospheric and electromagnetic activity will mask it from detection. Its isolation will offer us some measure of protection, and furthermore, the Galactic Federation has converted the station into a listening post, and its advanced sensory network will forewarn of us of any incoming assault. Also,” Eiron said, grinning, “Skytown is equipped with the components to construct thermonuclear weapons.”
The crowd around the room straightened, listening more attentively. “From here,” Eiron continued, “We will venture forth to add allies to our cause, liberating old friends and enlisting new ones. The citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom will cast off their shackles and prove that the small of body can prevail with strength of heart. The black wyvern of Daein shall roar once more, and strengthen our cause with sword and lance. The Hylia shall unfurl their standard, and Wisdom will show all that unyielding Courage is true Power!”
Sporadic applause broke out around the room, but a sobering expression came over Eiron’s face, and the crowd quieted. “We will be safe at Skytown while we perform this task. But not for long.” He looked around the room, meeting each and every pair of eyes. “Eventually, we will be detected, and Crehavos will send his forces to crush us.” His eyes turned dark as he continued to survey the crowd, staring at their stern faces. “You all know the dangers. The strength of our foe is vast, with power in numbers and arms that we cannot match. So,” he asked, his hands tightening into fists, “what then? When that day comes, when the stars themselves are blotted out by his armadas, do we run? Do we once again flee before his might?” Once more, silence gripped the room.
“In another world, a battered and beaten army was forced to retreat, again and again from their enemies. They fell back, burning all in their path, leaving nothing for the enemy to plunder, nothing to solace their losses, no sign of victory or remorse. They recoiled deep into the icy wastes of their homeland, drawing the enemy thin among the smoldering ruins of the invaded land. They drew their foes into total isolation, devoid of resources, supplies, or relief. And then they broke them.”
“I lay before you that which I would have you judge me by. I give to you, the greatest reenactment of the Scorched Earth Doctrine of War this world has ever seen.”
The holographic display behind Eiron expanded, displaying the two neighboring planets in Elysia’s system. “Now, our new headquarters is located in a tri-planet system at the edge of Federation space- composed of Elysia, Norion, and Bryyo. Norion is host to a Federation fleet and a powerful orbital defense system. From there, our combined space forces will maintain control of the system. Next, obviously, is Elysia, which will serve as our headquarters and as an early warning station. Finally, we have Bryyo: the lynchpin of our defensive strategy.”
“I’m going to keep this part simple. Bryyo is overflowing with an advanced hydrocarbon known simply as Fuel Gel, which the Federation and Pirate forces use to power their starships. Bryyo is the only source of this substance for any traversable distance. Quite simply, whoever controls Bryyo controls the ability to wage war in the system.”
“However, the force of our enemy is too great to oppose. No matter how well the cards are lined up in our favor, we cannot stand against Crehavos’ forces directly, and Bryyo will fall, as will Norion, as will Elysia. So we retreat, again and again from our enemy. We fall back, burning all in our path, leaving nothing for plunder, nothing to solace their losses, no sign of victory or remorse. We recoil deep into the cold recesses of space, drawing the enemy thin among the smoldering ruins of our invaded land. We will lure them into total isolation, devoid of resources, supplies, or relief. And then we will break them.”
“The enemy will take Bryyo, but not until well after we have spread Skytown’s nuclear stockpile across the planet. After they have driven us from the system, after they occupy and lay claim to Bryyo’s vast engines of war, when their fleet lies docked upon its surface, gorging itself with the spoils of battle-we will detonate the Theronian bombs, igniting the Fuel Gel on a planet wide scale. The forces of darkness will be consumed by a fire that not even Hell itself can match. The fullest realization of a Scorched Earth.”
Eiron parted his hands slightly, his palms held up. “We have been left behind. Snicket, Dobs, LGN, Kin, Samus, Snake, Banjo and Kazooie, Yoshi, Diddy Kong…They have left it up to us to defend this world while they introduce the instrument of Crehavos’ destruction.” He paused again, rallying himself. “This is our darkest hour, but it is now that we may shine brighter than ever! The final chapter of this conflict is approaching, and we, the SSS, the defenders of justice, will be the ones who pen the closing act! Ladies, gentlemen, fellow warriors, fighters, Saviors. It is time. Time for us to end this.”
