(Chapter 10: Darkrai)
“Who the hell is Darkrai?” Ike asked flatly.
“Darkrai is a legendary Pokemon, who is said to give people nightmares,” Gold replied.
“So it’s evil,” Sonic said.
“Not really... the nightmare attack is merely a defense mechanism. So long as we don’t try to attack it, he won’t see any reason to fight back”.
“The kid knows his stuff, I’ll give him that,” Link said.
“So where does Darkrai live?” Sonic asked.
“He lives on Newmoon Island, in the Sinnoh region.”
“How are we supposed to get there?!” Mario spat.
“We could use the Falcon Flyer,” Captain Falcon said.
“Okay, so who will go meet Darkrai?” Ike pondered.
“Sonic and I will go,” Mario said.

The duo arrived at Newmoon Island and hopped out of the Falcon Flyer. The grass was nice and smooth, and a gentle breeze blew through the air. Although the island was calm and tranquil, the feel was relatively sinister. Darkrai was definitely on the island.
Sonic and Mario headed up a small stairway and headed inside the small forest on the island. It wasn’t a forest at all, but more like a small pathway. It had a right turn and no left turn. Taking the turn, they found Darkrai in front of them, floating ominously in the air.
“You....You have come here...seeking my assistance...?”
Darkrai’s voice sounded like a deep whisper, and his icy blue eyes locked on the duo.
“Wow, he’s good,” Sonic said.
“What is it that you need my assistance with...? Could it be...could it be the war which you are all fighting...?”
“Well, yes, actually,” Mario confirmed.
“Why...why should I help you...? I know nothing of you...yet, you seem... familiar, in a way...as if...we have met before...”
****
“So, Mario and Sonic have gone off to find Darkrai,” Link said. “But what’re we gonna do?”
“We wait until they return,” Ike replied.
On the castle floor, a hedgehog-shaped shadow appeared, and in the sky, accompanied by Marx and Mewtwo, was none other than Zero.
“Hello, boys! I’m back!”
****
“Darkrai,” Sonic began. “We don’t really know where else to go... we were hoping that you could put them in a permanent nightmare from which they could not escape.”
“While I understand your purpose...I am afraid...that my powers will not be as useful on someone as powerful as him...but nonetheless, I am not going to allow this...fiend...to enslave the world. I will gladly help you out.”
“Wow, really?” Mario said, shocked. “Thanks!”
“Now let us make haste...I sense something bad has happened to your accomplices...”
****
Zero, Marx, and Mewtwo lowered themselves onto the castle rooftop. Down in the lower room, the group conversed about what to do.
“How did Zero know we’re here?!” Marth snapped.
“I don’t have any idea,” Link replied.
“Well he was obviously informed,” said Samus.
Meanwhile, Mario, Sonic and their new accomplice, Darkrai, made their way towards the castle. Just before they headed inside, Darkrai suddenly spoke up.
“He’s here!”
Darkrai gracefully became a shadow on the floor and crept up the castle wall onto the roof.
“What’s got him all shook up?” Sonic asked nonchalantly. Curious, the two headed inside and saw the others, panicking.
“What’s going on?” Mario asked.
“Zero’s here,” Ike told him.
“WHAT?!!” Sonic exclaimed, shocked.
“We’re going up there now. Did you manage to recruit Darkrai?”
Mario nodded, and The Smashers all blazed onto the roof, and saw Darkrai, who had decided to confront Zero after all.
“Leave this place! Now!” Darkrai barked.
“And who’s going to stop me? You? Ha. Go ahead and try.”
Between his two hands, Darkrai formed a black ball and fired it at Zero, who blocked the attack merely by holding out his hand. The black ball disintegrated.
“You call that an attack?” Zero taunted. “At least put SOME effort into it.”
Acting without reason, Marth suddenly charged Zero for an attack, but suddenly stopped dead in his tracks and dropped his sword, and held his head as he began screaming in pain.
“Foolish buffoon,” Zero remarked. Marth fell silent and fell to the ground. Using his psychokinesis, Zero, lifted up Marth’s sword.
“Hmph, a sword fit for a king,” he said. He held the sword in his hand and slid it through his belt.
“So, anyone else want to suffer the same fate as your friend here?”
Nobody responded.
“Then I guess I’ll just take this castle now, thank you very much.”
Marx shot a white beam from his mouth, which caused The Smashers to retreat. Now they truly had nowhere to go.
“What now? We lost the castle,” Luigi said.
“Where in the name of all that is holy did you come from?” Mario asked.
“I’m-a Luigi. I just do things.”
A few moments of silence passed, and the ground suddenly gave way, and The Smashers fell into the pit below.
