(Chapter 6: Saffron City)
----------------------------------
Part I: The Rescue of Zelda
----------------------------------
Zero watched as the group of heroes left the premise, and turned his attention to the Captain Falcon polygon. How could it lose? he pondered. It was one of the most powerful polygons he made, because it matched Captain Falcon’s stats, especially his speed. He placed his right hand over his muzzle and leaned against the wall, staring blankly at the wall across from him. He lowered his head and looked at the floor, trying to figure out how his Captain Falcon polygon lost.
“Wait...” he whispered. “What if... what if Zelda had given Falcon the strength he needed?” He looked back up and waved his hand. “No, that’s not possible. Ganondorf captured her and threw her in that cell which is resistant to her magic. There’s no way she could’ve helped them... she was out of range as well...” He stepped away from the wall and began pacing. “What if Zelda DIDN’T help him in some way, and Captain Falcon was actually stronger than his clone...? Even though I did make the clones to be equal with that of The Smashers, they were also meant to be able to predict what move they would use next.”
He turned and looked out the window again, barely catching a glimpse of them continuing on. “I will find out how you overthrew my army... even if I have to destroy Saffron City to do it.”
****
The group continued onwards to Saffron City, which wasn’t too far from their current location. Once out of the dense forest, they would be just a stone’s throw away from Saffron City. The beams of light from the sun caused shadows to appear on the leaves.
As they walked towards the city, the sky grew dark. Grey clouds had blocked the sun, and the air became just a tad colder. Suddenly, Mario fell into a pit which was covered by leaves, and found himself in what appeared to be an underground tunnel.
“Mario!” Fox called. “Are you okay?”
“I’m a-fine!” Mario hollered back. “You should see this!”
After some hesitation, The Smashers jumped into the pit and found themselves in a tunnel that was lit by candlelight. The candles were held in brass locks up against the wall.
“Please tell me we aren’t back in Zero’s fortress...” Falco grumbled.
“We aren’t,” Marth replied.
They made their way down the hall, the air was cold and still. They eventually found that there was a fork in the path, forming a T-shape.
“Well, where do we go now?” Meta Knight asked.
Mario looked down both paths; they seemed to go on forever. Finally, he turned to them and said, “We’ll split up. Marth, Falco, Link, Pikachu, and I will take the left path. Meta Knight, Gold, Red, Fox, and Captain Falcon will take the right path.”
The two split up and headed down their respective paths, Mario leading his group and Meta Knight leading his. Mario’s path cam to a left turn and they found themselves in a hallway with jail cells. There were many of them, lined up beside each other, on the left and right sides of the walls. Meta Knight’s group found the exact same thing, only their path was a right turn.
“Whoa,” Mario whispered.
“I know... what is this place?” Falco asked. His breath could be seen in the chilly air.
Meta Knight’s group continued down the hall, looking into the jail cells. All they saw were skeletons of people who had died in their cells.
“This is awful,” Fox said.
Mario’s group continued onward when something caught Link’s attention: Zelda was in one of the cells on the left.
“Guys!” Link snapped, and pointed to the cell.
“Dear God!” Pikachu said. “Is she alright?”
Link didn’t respond. He had no way to break down the cell door. The only way he could was if Red was with them, as Charizard could easily melt the bars. Suddenly, Meta Knight’s group appeared.
“Red!” Link said. “I need Charizard, now!”
“What for, Link?”
Link said, “Look inside the cell.”
Red checked the cell and saw Zelda, asleep in her cell. Red pulled out his Poke Ball and sent out Charizard. He ordered the orange dragon to use Flamethrower on the bars and Charizard followed its orders. The bars seemed to weaken and, to an extent, melt. Link threw open the door and picked up Zelda, who was unconscious. He walked out of the cell door, and there, in front of them, was Ganondorf.
“So,” the King of Evil began. “I see you managed to rescue your girlfriend. Kudos to you.”
Link leered at his opponent with fire in his eyes. “What did you do to her?” he asked, sternly. Ganondorf let out a sly smile.
“She attempted to escape from her cell... and since I’m well aware that she’s helped you in all our battles over the years, I couldn’t let that happen. She struck out at me and I struck back. She’s been unconscious ever since.”
Link passed Zelda over to Marth, and grabbed the Master Sword and Hylian Shield off of his back.
“You do realize what has to happen now, don’t you?” Link asked.
“Unfortunately the rules have changed, boy,” Ganondorf retorted. “While yes, I would normally be sentenced to death for killing someone like Zelda, the rules have changed. Have you not noticed that the entire planet is...well, different? I mean, Zero’s empire is at its peak, his world takeover is almost complete. All he needs to do is get rid of all of you and he can do that without any interference. Of course, there is always me, and I will likely try to overthrow him. The result? Nobody will know. Perhaps I will succeed in overthrowing him and rule the world myself. Or perhaps he will kill me. Either way, we win.”
“So you have some connection to Zero, it seems,” Marth stated.
“Yes,” Ganondorf replied. “I’m his right-hand man. He ordered me to capture Zelda and bring her here. The cells are invulnerable to her magic, so she could not escape... but now, you’re here and she is freed. But it is of no concern to me. The blow I struck on her... it’s amazing she’s alive at all. But she will not live for much longer.”
“I don’t care about what you say!” Link snapped. “I am going to kill you, right here and now!”
Ganondorf’s smile faded, and had a more serious look on his face. “And just what makes you think you can defeat me? Zelda is unconscious and on the verge of death. Her magic will not work. She cannot help you.”
“I don’t need her magic to kill you!” Link replied.
“Oh, but you do. You’ve become so reliant on her for all these years to help you in our fights... you’re even wishing she could help you right now, aren’t you? She can’t help you this time, Link. And you know that without her help, you are going to die.”

Part II: The Arrival
---------------------------------
Link pulled out his bow and arrow and shot one of the arrows at Ganondorf, who caught it with his left hand and crushed it. Ganondorf chuckled and said, “Foolish boy, there is no point in battling me. In fact, there isn’t any point in continuing on with your journey... Zero WILL take over the world, and I will be there to witness your demise.”
“Oh, really?” Mario said. “We managed to topple a sample of his army. “What a-makes you so sure that his world takeover will come to fruition?”
“What makes you so sure you’ll be able to defeat his army in full?”
Mario considered Ganondorf’s question. They barely made it out alive when Zero sicked his clones on them. To fight their army in full was just unimaginable. They might stand a chance if they had a full army of their own, but they didn’t stand a chance with their current group.
“There is no point in continuing,” Ganondorf repeated. “Once the army is truly complete, you will all die... and I will be there to watch.”
Ganondorf snapped his fingers and vanished in a puff of purple smoke. Behind him was a staircase, leading to an upper floor. Mario’s posse ran up the stairway and found they weren’t in the hallway anymore. They were in what appeared to be a corporation of some kind. In front of them was a fountain, and on their right side was a small brown barricade with a desk inside, up against a wall. The floor was empty for the most part. There were some plants alongside the left wall, and an elevator was right beside the stairway leading to the basement, with another stairway beside it, leading upstairs. The group left the building and found themselves in a large city.
“Where...are we?” Pikachu asked.
Beside the building was a sign. Gold read it, and said aloud, “Silph Corporation.”
The group had made it to Saffron City at last.

Silver continued on in his search for Pidgeot, but could not find the magnificent bird Pokemon. Suddenly, a shadow could be seen on the ground above him, and Pidgeot swooped down and landed in front of him.
“Pidgeot-TOOOO!” The bird shrieked. It was challenging Silver to a battle.
“Heh...” Silver chuckled. “I knew you would want to fight me. Strong Pokemon are drawn to me.” He grabbed a Poke Ball from his belt and threw it, with Magneton popping out.
“Mag-net-on...”
“Well? What are you waiting for? Bring it on!”
Pidgeot spread its wings and dashed for Magneton at blinding speeds, tackling him with brute force. Magneton flew back and retaliated with Thunderbolt, and Pidgeot swiftly dodged the attack. Magneton quickly attacked with Thunderbolt again, hitting Pidgeot directly... but something was wrong. Even though Pidgeot got hit, it continued to fly as Magneton held the attack.
“Pull back!”
Magneton stopped using Thunderbolt and moved out of Pidgeot’s path, and Silver instead told it to attack with Tri-Attack. The attack worked; Pidgeot lost its balance in mid-flight and slid across the ground. Using this as his chance, Silver threw and Ultra Ball at the bird, a red beam sucked it inside. The ball wobbled around about three times before stopping. Pidgeot was caught.

Not to long after they arrived in Saffron, the group admitted Zelda to a hospital. Unfortunately, no good came out of it. Zelda was in a deep coma, and, as if that wasn’t enough, was bleeding internally. The doctors couldn’t save her. Link kept pacing in the waiting room, when a doctor finally came out.
“Uh...Link?” He said.
“What’s up, doc?” Link replied.
“You obviously know of her condition...how she’s bleeding internally and in a coma...” He seemed hesitant when speaking, possibly because he feared Link might attack him if he said the wrong thing. “...Anyway... uh... I don’t know how to say this, but she’s going to die.”
Link leered at the doctor, who was now quivering in fear from the look Link gave him. Link grabbed the doctor by the collar of his white jacket, looked him straight in the eye, and said, “You’d better do something about it and prevent that from happening.”
Link let go of the doctor, who replied with, “We can’t. Not only are her chances of waking up slim to none, but the internal bleeding can’t be stopped. There’s nothing we can do for her.”
Link clenched both of his hands into fists, and soon heard a long “beep” sound coming from Zelda’s room. Link’s eyes started welling up with tears, and quickly left the hospital, returning to the hotel where the Smashers were staying while in Saffron. He and Mario shared a room. Link sat on his bed, closest to the wall, and held his head in his palm.
****
Shadow kicked the door down to the entrance of G.U.N. He stormed through the main corridor, with an angry expression on his face, determined to murder them all. Gunshots roared through the hollow corridors, with the G.U.N soldiers screaming in pain. His ears twitched and the black hedgehog turned around, only to hear footsteps coming his way. He pointed his gun down the hall, only to see a teenager with long red hair and piercing eyes, wearing a long, black coat. Shadow didn’t think of the boy as a threat based on his appearance.
“You...” Shadow began. “You seem familiar... Have we met before?”
Silver shook his head. “Not to my knowledge we haven’t, Shadow.”
Shadow slightly raised his head and looked the boy straight in the eyes. “How do you know my name?”
“Peh. Who DOESN’T know your name? Everyone in the world knows it. Even Team Rocket.”
That threw Shadow off, and the black hedgehog put his index finger over the trigger. “So, you are an enemy, after all!”
“Hm? Because of my mentioning of Team Rocket? I assure you that I have no relation to them, other than the fact that I am their leader’s son. They’re weak bastards who fight in groups to seem tough, but when you get them alone, they’re the most pathetic opponents around. I hate the weak. In fact, I hate almost any type of group. Good, evil, it doesn’t matter. In my opinion, I’m against everyone, so to speak.”
Shadow lowered his gun. He seemed to like how Silver opposed everyone, which was something the two seemed to share.
“You and I seem to have something in common, boy,” Shadow replied. “Heroism and villainy is just one’s point of view. And, both are viewed differently.”
“Exactly,” Silver replied, grinning. “Perhaps we should form an alliance.”
Shadow liked the idea of that, the two of them fighting against everyone... although he didn’t quite like the partnership idea. Silver held out his hand, and the two shook on it
