What's always worked for Iris is following her heart and her hunches.
Iris grew up with Pokemon in a way that heavily influenced the way she views Pokemon. She connects with them in a deep and personal way. It has been described by others that when you battle her it seems like her and her Pokemon are one. They each complete each other, have something the other lacks. She somewhat embodies the feeling of Unova and the yin-yang dynamic it represents. Understanding the heart of her Pokemon and filling the role they need is important to her. Once she reaches that level she believes the move to the same beat.. feel the same feelings and this level of connection is important to her. Although this is focused on Pokemon and even more so Dragon Pokemon, she believes that Pokemon battles are a beautiful expression of self and that by battling strong trainers everyone understands each other better.
Iris has a blunt, simple, but heartfelt way of expressing herself. She doesn't waste words or make anything flowery, or veil her true intentions. Her sentences are often raw feeling, spoken simply and her really excitable nature causes her to exclaim easily. She's a genuinely friendly person who finds herself caring about other without much trouble. This is because she makes her judgements about how she feels about people like her hunches. She's been described as adventurous and bold.. and she's never afraid to tell someone how she's feeling.
Iris is ambitious and confident in herself and her training, and pushes herself through her problems. Believing that she'll always keep getting stronger by keeping on moving forward. She tends to believe they'll work out somehow although sometimes she can miss the bigger picture that's giving her trouble if she doesn't have someone else to point it out.
Iris has been training Pokemon since she could remember, meaning she started at a very young age. This has allowed her to progress somewhat faster then some might expect and has caused her to be a bit defensive about her age. It's most definitely her button and the thing that can make her a bit defensive. She often deflects comments about her age by finding something about the person to tease a little, or even point out the childish traits in others. If she recognizes childish traits in others, then obviously she's not a child herself right?
Part of what makes Iris a natural battler is her ability to quickly think through problems, and act on them just as quickly. She doesn't waste time and flower her thoughts even, and her although a bit simplistic as mentioned before it doesn't change their effectiveness.
She is a believer in spirituality and occasionally in the supernatural, and follows her instincts rather then letting logic dictate anything. She's the type of person to just do something because it feels right, rather then makes sense.. sometimes getting herself lost in the process if she doesn't think at all about something. She can claim to have somewhat of a six-sense and feels very in tune with her surroundings. Often finding places that "feel" more right to her then others.
HISTORY
Iris came from the Village of Dragons. This village has it's closest connection to Unova, but even to Unova it is seen as a far away and somewhat removed from it. Iris speaks of her hometown and childhood as one spent among people who lived with Pokemon in a way that was closer and more intimate then the way the other regions live with their Pokemon. Pokemon freely roamed the streets and used the village in very much the same way as humans.. but Iris speaks of this as a way that her village takes living with Pokemon for granted too however. Pokemon being apart of their daily life was just a fact, although she describes this place as being the one that taught her the desire to become a Dragon Master as well.
The closest this Village normally had to outsiders was Blackthorn City, whose Dragon Den and Dragon Tamer Clan where frequent visitors, guests, and even villagers of the Village of Dragons. The elder of her village and the Master of the Dragon Tamer Clan spent much time together and in fact much time with Iris, but Iris spent much time with many of the people of the village. Although considered very much an orphan, Iris was a child of the village and her efforts and life where cared for by this village.
The Master of the Dragon Tamer Clan knew that Iris had the potential to go very far but knew that she would never live up to that potential cooped up in the village. The Village Elder agreed and so it was decided that that Drayden from Unova would be brought over and her continued teachings would largely fall to him and Alder of Unova. They believed that Unova and Drayden were the right fit for her. It helped that Drayden had been searching the world for his successor.
Drayden eventually upon meeting up with the Master and Iris agreed with this plan. Her potential was evident with him, and he agreed to continue to see her teachings and growth. Unova was a bit of a culture shock for the young girl as it was extremely different from the land she had called home for so long and she quickly found herself not only learning more about Dragon Pokemon and her growth as a Pokemon trainer but learning about the place she would call home from now on.
Like most children she gained really basic education, although she at first found herself struggling to meet up with the other children, learning to read a bit later then the other kids her age due to it not being something she dealt with in the Village of Dragons. Drayden saw to most of this personally however, so much pressure was avoided.. although Drayden was just known as the type who would help the next generation so she was hardly fully removed from their company as well or coming would have been pointless.
During this time she often became homesick for the Village of Dragon's, during her initial being homesick period. Sometimes she felt so vary different from the rest of this place, and it all started weighing very heavily on the young girl. She quickly found places in Opelucid City that reminded her of home and these became her familiar haunts when she wasn't in training. She kept pushing through it.. but sometimes it felt very hard.
However she continued to care very deeply for Drayden and eventually Alder who she met shortly after coming to Unova, who both took a continued interest as she continued to become a stronger Pokemon trainer at such a young age. Alder like he usually did though, taught her about other things... she specifically remembers most his teachings about spirituality.
As Iris got older she was more encouraged to get out and a few things on her own, as long as she wasn't gone so long. She had run ins with many of the Gym Leaders through Drayden and would often visit them. For instance she would often visit Burgh in Castelia City and see his latest pieces, and although he considered her taste a bit.. simplistic he always seemed to put a lot of stock in what she thought.
Iris had her first run in with Team Plasma in this city and became passionately against the way they stole Pokemon and their methods and goals in general to remove Pokemon from those that had connected with them as that was almost a direct counter to the things she believed about Pokemon and human interactions.
Her studies continued and ultimately proved successful enough that Drayden believed Iris herself was just as strong as the boy that Brycen and the others believed was chosen by Reshiram. Although this was largely the same opinion he had about her that ultimately made him decide to train her in the first place of course.
Her focus however remained with her studies, and she eventually spent time with the Pokedex holder Black when he came to visit Drayden's gym. Although he brought up her usual frustration at her abilities and worth being judged by her age, they became friends and spent time together... and then battled each other in the Unova Pokemon League. Although she tried her best and made it to the semifinals.. she was ultimately defeated by the Pokedex Holder.
