Bionis and Mechonis
The setting of Xenoblade originated in a world that was nothing but endless ocean, until two great titans, the Bionis and the Mechonis, came into existence. The two giants fought a timeless battle, until with one final strike, only their lifeless bodies remained, forever locked in combat. Eons later, new forms of life arose on the corpses of the two titans; organic lifeforms such as the humanoid Homs on the Bionis; and mechanical life forms, such as the Machina, on the Mechonis. The Homs of Bionis soon began fighting for survival against the war machines of the Mechonis, named the "Mechon".
Bionis
Bionis is the white organic god that fights with Mechonis at the beginning of Xenoblade Chronicles. Bionis is a white, almost grey, god that resembles a thin warrior. Similar to Mechonis, it wields a sword and has various protrusions on its body. Bionis' face is more humanoid than Mechonis', but does not possess a noticeable mouth.
Before the start of Xenoblade Chronicles, Bionis fought in a tremendous battle with Mechonis. Both appeared to be equally matched, although Bionis did manage to injure Mechonis by cutting off its left arm. The blade Bionis wields is said to have been the same Monado that is used by Dunban and Shulk during the game's story, however with noticeable differences. This Monado is much larger to fit Bionis, as well as being white and having a simple symmetrical design. Eventually both Bionis and Mechonis appear to die during the fight and end up locked in their final positions forever. It is later revealed in the game that they were not dead, just in an inactive state.
Mechonis
Mechonis is the name of the black mechanical god that fights with Bionis during the beginning of Xenoblade Chronicles. The general appearance of Mechonis is a towering, hideous black warrior. It has no "true" face, similar to the Mechon that inhabit its body. Instead, it has red eyes arranged in an almost church or fortress-like pattern. Its body is clunky and bulky, unlike Bionis' more sleek and graceful design. The giant sword that Mechonis wields is actually the location of the Battle of Sword Valley. Mechonis can be viewed from many different locations in the game, including Bionis' Leg near the start of the game, and the Fallen Arm, where it is towering over the landscape.
For unknown reasons, Mechonis fought Bionis in an enormous fight. At some point, Bionis was able to gain the advantage by slicing off Mechonis' hand, forcing it to wield its sword with one hand. At some point both gods appear to die during the battle, leaving them locked in their current positions. These huge bodies now comprise the world of Xenoblade Chronicles. This later on becomes the "creation of the world" story for the people inhabited in it.
