Highlighted Plays

Ok, I'm going to post a couple of plays and go through what my thought process was for each one. Might be a good way to look back over our matches and improve our games. I also played the entire game from White's point of view, so keep that in mind whenever I differentiate between left and right pieces. Additionally, it's my turn in all of the pictures below.

1. Ok, so this was relatively early on in the match. SLE had sent his Bishop forward to put my King in Check, but got pinned by an advancing wall of Pawns. What I should have done is move down my right Rook to cover my Knight. Any trade would have then put me in an positional and piece advantage, but instead I got target fixated, took his Bishop with my Pawn, and lost my Knight.

2. Here we have the story of Yolo the Bishop. In a fit of madness, I moved my left Bishop down and took SLE's right Knight. I somehow managed to forget that the 3c Knight would be able to retaliate, even though I was attacking the 2e Knight specifically because they covered each other. The idea was that SLE would take my Bishop with his Queen, which would then allow my Rook to move left one space and threaten the King. Instead, SLE countered with his other Knight and shut down my Rook's options. It worked out alright in the end, since SLE weakening his presence on the left allowed me to create a really strong push on that side, but it was definitely an ill planned move and a waste of a Bishop.

3. SLE has just taken my 4g Pawn, which was protecting my Rook from his King. Instead of retreating, I use my Rook to take his remaining Bishop. SLE can counter and take the Rook, but doing so would result in losing a Rook of his own and his second Knight, and allow my Queen to take command of the center. Knowing this, SLE advances his g4 Pawn to threaten a promotion.

This is probably the only completely unqualified good moves I made among those featured in this analysis. That's not to say I didn't make other good moves, just that this one pretty much went exactly the way I wanted it to. With SLE's pieces tied up on the left, I was free to move in my second Rook down the right, which eventually led to SLE's King being chased around the board by my Queen and two Rooks. Eventually we found ourselves here:

4. In which I make the biggest blunder of the game. SLE had just moved his King out of Check, and despite noting that I had to move my Queen several times, I failed to do so and lost it to SLE's Knight.

Despite being cornered, SLE's in a really strong defensive position here. Up to this point I'd avoided dealing with his Rooks by keeping his King in Check, but now I had to account for their overlapping coverage. Taking one would leave me unable to take the other, and my Bishop and left Rook couldn't move, since they were pinning his pieces in place. If I had to do things over, I'd probably move the Queen to b2 to threaten his Rook while keeping the King trapped in his hole. SLE would have to save his Rook, and I'd use the opportunity to move my right Rook to h6 and prepare to attack his h2 Pawn.

5. Of course, I threw away my Queen and found myself staring down two pissed off, overlapping Rooks. This is where we found ourselves a few turns later. Despite putting SLE's Knight in a really bad situation, my goal here was actually to take his c3 and d4 Pawns. I was hoping on him moving the Knight to protect it, then sweeping left and clearing out room for my own Pawns to advance. Instead he used his c1 Rook to attack upwards and I ended up losing one of my Rooks for his Knight.

6. After some deft maneuvering on both sides, we find ourselves here. My King's movement options are horribly limited by SLE's e5 Pawn, and I know that if he takes a7 I'll certainly lose. I make the super questionable decision of using my Knight to take the e5 Pawn in order to draw SLE's attention to the center and draw his focus from my Bishop. SLE takes the bait and captures my Knight, moving his Pawn out of the way. To keep his attention on the center, I begin advancing Pawns to draw his King up, and when he finally moves on a7, he's forgotten about the Bishop. He takes the pawn, loses his Rook, and can no longer stop me from advancing my Pawns to promotion.

General Overview

This was an incredibly close match, with SLE and I consistently countering each other move for move. This wasn't decided by one person outplaying the other, but by who could make the less costly mistakes. Dropping my Queen nearly cost the match, and was only reversed when SLE dropped his Rook at the very end.

Generally speaking, this game was characterized by me constantly trying to force SLE into trading blows for positional and piece advantage, and SLE slipping away at every turn.
