This article was posted in the online version of the German magazine Der Spiegal on the heels of thousands of leaked files from Britain's Climate Research Unit, University of East Anglia(either by a hacker or an inside whistle blower) which illustrates that global warming experts were attempting to silence and marginalize skeptics and dissenters.
This article, especially in the context of the leaked e-mails, immediately induces a number of thoughts and questions, perhaps the most important being the ethical standards in the scientific community; Most of us have a vague image of scientists as unbiased observers toiling away at data, scrupulously considering any confounding theories and willfully distancing themselves from the political implications of their research when in fact scientific research has been a blood sport for centuries, perhaps millennia(Fermat's Last Theorem anybody?).
The new data also introduces some basic common sense questions; If solar activity plays such a crucial role in reversing global warming, why is it's activity depreciated in regards to warming? For example the disappearance of sun spots has been determined as the reason for recent cooling temperatures, so by that line of thinking, why can't we conclude that sun spots were the cause of the purposed 30-year warming hike?
Also, the study really calls into question the reliability of the machines that record temperature data. Firstly, their accuracy record is a non-sequitur. Scientists are going by temperature data going back 180 years. Just in the last ten years, these machines have been replaced in the U.S., and to add to that, available surface temperature readings cover only half the planet even today. Before WWII, they covered less than a quarter.
Also, none of this available data seems to acknowledge what kind of contribution, if any, clouds and rain play on the Earth's temperature.

Regardless, it’s not the first scandalous story on global warming and it certainly won’t be the last. John Stossel, on his show 20/20 show two years ago, talked to former scientists from the IPCC, the group that said it was a scientific consensus that man made global warming was a serious threat and must be reversed. One scientist resigned because he disagreed with the study but his name was left on the report; it was only after he threatened to sue that his name was taken off the report.
More recently, it was the Environmental Protection Agency’s suppression of three of its employees. First, the EPA suppressed an internal report from one of the agency’s own, 35-year analyst Alan Carlin - a scientist who specializes in climate change. His report warned that the science of climate change was dubious and that we shouldn’t pass laws that will raise energy prices, hurt American families and hobble the nation’s economy without a full understanding of climate change. Later, the EPA suppressed a video entitled, “The Huge Mistake” by Laurie Williams and Allan Zabel, two lawyers currently working at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – a video that says cap and trade will not work.
Superfreakonomics author Stephen Dubner sums up the current state of things better than I can: “If you are a fan of science, this is a pretty grim day. If you are a fierce partisan on either side of the global-warming issue, you are either gnashing your teeth or clicking your heels. If you are a government official heading to Copenhagen soon for the climate summit, you are probably wondering what the hell you’re supposed to think now.”

And, say the British experts, when their figure is adjusted for two naturally occurring climate phenomena, El Niño and La Niña, the resulting temperature trend is reduced to 0.0 degrees Celsius -- in other words, a standstill.
The differences among individual regions of the world are considerable. In the Arctic, for example, temperatures rose by almost three degrees Celsius, which led to a dramatic melting of sea ice. At the same time, temperatures declined in large areas of North America, the western Pacific and the Arabian Peninsula. Europe, including Germany, remains slightly in positive warming territory.

"We have to explain to the public that greenhouse gases will not cause temperatures to keep rising from one record temperature to the next, but that they are still subject to natural fluctuations," says Latif. For this reason, he adds, it is dangerous to cite individual weather-related occurrences, such as a drought in Mali or a hurricane, as proof positive that climate change is already fully underway.
"Perhaps we suggested too strongly in the past that the development will continue going up along a simple, straight line. In reality, phases of stagnation or even cooling are completely normal," says Latif.

They predict that the average global temperature will increase by about three degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of the century, unless humanity manages to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991, for example, caused world temperatures to drop by an average of 0.5 degrees Celsius, thereby prolonging a cooler climate phase that had begun in the late 1980s.
But the Mount Pinatubo eruption happened too long ago to be related to the current slowdown in global warming. So what is behind this more recent phenomenon?

Despite their current findings, scientists agree that temperatures will continue to rise in the long term. The big question is: When will it start getting warmer again?

Anyway, I’ll maybe cut the last few points off the filtered curve before I give the talk again as that’s trending down as a result of the end effects and the recent cold-ish years.
