NES Presents... Devaux's Top Tens
Welcome to NES Presents! This is the show where NES Presents entertainment to you!
This week, I am serving to you a heaping load of TOP TENS. Like David Letterman, except not funny. And not interesting.
Let's start off with this week's entertainment: Devaux's Top Tens!
For some reason, I think you all care about my opinions on things. This week, being the first week of NES Presents, I'm going to treat you to two Top Tens.
TOP TEN ZELDA DUNGEONS
I won't pretend I've played through every Zelda game. I've never touched the Oracle games, never finished the original, and ZELDA 2 IS FREAKING HARD MAN.
But, like any other gamer, I love Zelda. It's one of those franchises that doesn't disappoint often, if at all. As I'm sure you all know, the dungeon is a staple of the series that makes its way into every installment.
And with that horrible transition, I give you the Top Ten Zelda Dungeons.
10. Snow Temple, Spirit Tracks
I am a sucker for block puzzles. Blocks sliding on ice excite me for some reason. As a result, I'm a fan of Zelda's ice-themed dungeons. I am also a sucker for the boomerang. It's my favorite Zelda mainstay item, and it never leaves my equips if I can help it. The Snow Temple had both the Boomerang and block puzzles. Need I elaborate further?
9. Tail Cave, Link's Awakening
Tail Cave is here for one reason and one reason only: the ROC'S FEATHER. Link could jump. And it was awesome. There were even some areas within the dungeon where Link could jump on enemies like Mario. The Roc's Feather essentially combined two of Nintendo's greatest franchises. Otherwise, the rest of the temple was adequate, but was outshown by the Roc's Feather's first appearance.
8. Mutoh's Temple, Phantom Hourglass
Mutoh's Temple did everything well. The Hammer's new incarnation is a great twist on an old weapon, great puzzles abound, and Eox is an exceptionally creative boss. It doesn't make my mind explode with brilliance, but it plays well overall.
7. Shadow Temple, Ocarina of Time
In a game where nearly every dungeon had some element of fear in it, the Shadow Temple took the cake. I remember when I first played the Shadow Temple. My trousers were soiled. The sheer atmosphere of this dungeon.... *shivers*
6. Tower of the Gods, Wind Waker
Not going to lie. Wind Waker, although my favorite Zelda game, had some annoying dungeons. The Wind Temple in particular stresses me out like crazy. But the Tower of the Gods is quite fun. The puzzles related to the Command Melody are fun and you can't deny the bow as being one of Link's best weapons. It's something I look forward to every time I play Wind Waker.
5. Temple of Time, Twilight Princess
Twilight Princess really shone in its second half. The items were creative and the puzzles related to them were fun. The Dominion Rod never got a chance to shine outside of the Temple of Time, being useless in combat and BREAKING THE MOMENT YOU STEP OUT OF THE DUNGEON. But, as this dungeon showed, it was a fun item to use, and it should've gotten more screentime.
4. Stone Tower Temple, Majora's Mask
Stone Tower was the only Majora's Mask dungeon to make use of all three of the transformation masks. It's the most interesting dungeon in Majora's Mask because of this alone. The boss is also fun, as you become a giant to crush it. Which, to say the least, is exciting as hell.
3. Sand Temple, Spirit Tracks
I LOVE the puzzles in this dungeon. This is a direct result of the Sand Wand, the dungeon's item. It's also a great boss. Also a result of the Sand Wand. Sand Wand Sand Wand Sand Wand. Sand Wand.
2. Arbiter's Grounds, Twilight Princess
Best boss in the series, most creative item in the series. Do the math.
1. Snowpeak Ruins, Twilight Princess
Why do I love Snowpeak? Firstly, the concept. The dungeon is a yeti mansion. That's awesome. Second, the Ball and Chain. I consider this to be one of the best items in the entire Zelda franchise. It turns Link from a one-man army to a one-man army with a TANK. Thirdly, the boss. Blizzeta's entrance still scares the bejeezus out of me, and, although not very challenging, is very fun, probably due to the nature of the Ball and Chain.
And that is the top 10 Zelda dungeons.
But wait! There's more! Kirby! He's fun! And cute! And awesome!
And he sucks.
And he copies.
TOP TEN COPY ABILITIES YEAH
I didn't even attempt to make a transition there.
10. Bubble (Squeak Squad)
OK, Bubble was fairly useless. But it was extremely creative, and fairly awesome in concept. So it's definitely worth a mention on this list.
9. Mike (Adventure)
Kirby absolutely MURDERED every enemy on screen by screeching into a mic. And, unlike other similar abilities, it could be used three times. And mohawks are naturally awesome, as proved by Mr. T. Giving Kirby a mohawk was a brilliant idea and whoever came up with it should have gotten a raise.
8. Ghost (Squeak Squad)
Now this is fun. You only unlocked this ability only after beating 99% of the game, so its use was very limited, but being able to possess all the different enemies in the game and discovering what you can do with them is an adventure in itself.
7. Electric Rock (64)
Kirby 64 had a unique abiility-combination system that promised a new ability for every combination of base abilities. Some, like Fire+Needle=Fire Arrow, were fairly basic and easy to come up with. But what do you do if you combine Stone and Spark? YOU GET A ROCK TETHERED WITH LIGHTNING. It was one of Kirby's most useful abilities, decimating anything in his path. Score one for creativity.
6. UFO (Adventure)
Kirby had some pretty fantastic abilities in his day. The UFO was one of them. It combined Beam, Laser, and had its own little quirks, all in an alien package that made it all the more appealing.
5. Ninja (Super Star)
Don't lie. You want to be a ninja. Don't feel bad about it, so does everyone else in this world. And Kirby is there to help you live out that fantasy. Nothing much to say about this ability except to say... YOU'RE A FRICKING NINJA MAN. WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT?
4. Hammer (Super Star)
FLAMING HAMMER. That is all.
3. Yo-yo (Super Star)
Ah, the yo-yo. It's not supposed to be a weapon. And yet it is. There's something poetic about turning a child's plaything into a weapon of mass destruction. Kirby pulls it off with pizazz. He utterly tears through EVERYTHING with the Gazer Spiral.
2. Magic (Squeak Squad)
Step right up and view the show! Watch as the amazing magician pulls doves out of his hat! See as he shoots cards at unfathomable velocities! And view the spectacle of a GIANT FUCKING CLOWN HEAD KILLING EVERYTHING EVER! Yeah, the clown head is awesome.
1. Shuriken Bombs (64)
Remember when I was talking about the Ninja ability and asked "What more could you want?" Well, what if you were a ninja and your shurikens EXPLODED UPON IMPACT? I would be significantly pleased. When Kirby hits enemies with his exploding shurikens, the enemy stops for a second as if it were saying, "Holy crap, I'm going to die." And then they explode. It is a beautiful thing.
And those are my top tens for the week. I know you don't agree with me. Don't keep quiet about it. Comment! Now! Or else!
And now, a bonus trivia question! First correct response gets 100 free rupees.
In EarthBound, the first city is Onett. The second is Twoson. Third, Threed. What is the fourth town you visit?
I'll also give 100 rupees to a random person who comments on this thread next Sunday.
Speaking of next week, Week 2 will have Kunekune doing... something. I don't even know. See you soon!
