Guide to Building Large Empire:
1.Make Settler
2.Move Settler to a open spot that's conneced to your territory.
3.Build City.
4.Make 2 only 2 soliders for now for your city.
5.Make something that will boost happiness e.g. Temple
6.By then it should have a town level of 3, 4, or 5.
7.Do anything with this town, and soon build another settler.
8.Oh, and you need a lot of workers. More for every couple of cities you make to keep em happy and growing.
Repeat this and you will have a huge empire!!!

Tips
Always try to have gold coming in every turn. To do this click on the first icon on the top and lower Happy, or Science. Having gold will improve trading with ither countries.(so you can buy stuff from em)

I recently borrowed civ 4 from my friend... I beat it in a couple hours with Americans (NAVY SEALS OWN) It was a great game
