(Previously on The Rift: Link is tricked into killing Luigi and they devise a plan to go get Kirby to help them. But who is the strange shadow that was watching them... and why haven't we checked up on Peach?)
Peach was in one of the many refurbished cells in the penatentiary, sitting on a cot she was given, crying heavily. She had a picture of her and Mario in her hand. In the picture they were locked in an eternal kiss, which seemed redundant to her now.
"Peach?" Peach stopped crying for a moment, remembering the voice as one of Mario's many enemies. She tried to put a body to the voice and came up with Wario. She pulled out a hand mirror and held it outside of her cell to reflect the cell to her right. Sure enough, Wario's ugly mug was pressed against the cell bars, trying to look beyond his own holding area.
"What are you doing here?" Peach's voice still wavered as if she was about to burst into tears over Mario at any time.
"We got cought outside of your castle and we were brought here." Peach gave him a confused look and realized there was something weird about what he had said.
"We?"
"Yeah, Waluigi and me. I got chucked into this cell, Waluigi abandoned me and went to work for their chief scientist. I'm going to wring that pathetic-excuse-of-a-villian's neck whenever I get out of here, or get a chance." Peach sat back down on her cot and she could hear Wario let himself fall onto his back.
"Wario... why are you evil?"
"Why?" Wario burst into his rather annoying and bolsterous laughter, but calmed down and seemed to become serious. "Because Mario always annoyed me. I was good at one time, but he never really gave me a chance to shine. He always stole my glory, so I wasn't ever really evil, I was just trying to get even with the man who calls himself 'Wario's good alter-ego'. In hind sight, I could have let it go and went on with my life. But instead I made a stupid decision."
Peach looked at Mario's picture and found Wario's story hard to believe, but gave him the benefit of the doubt anyway. Peach reached into her dress pocket and pulled out Mario's final gift for her; a green and orange fireflower. It was said to give the ultimate fireball ability, fireballs that can destroy anything, including magic.
"Wario, I have heard that you also have the ability to use some of Mario's talents."
"Yeah, only a few, like fireball and cape." Peach reached out of her cell and presented him with the rare fire flower.
"This was Mario's last gift to me, it has the ability to generate fireballs that can break through anything." Wario grabbed the flower and absorbed it as Peach retracted her hand back into her cell. She could hear him preparing a fireball, then heard something hit Wario's cell door.
"Thank you princess, now I have a score to settle." Wario declared as he made his appearance in front of Peach's cell with his trademark sneer printed on his face. He turned around and began walking away from the princess's cell.
"What about helping me, you said you were good." Wario stopped for a few seconds then looked over his shoulder at Peach.
"I lied."
