Chapter 24: The Denizen of Turnback Cave
The vessel was flying through space as quickly as it could. Its appearance was unusual, especially for craft traveling in space. This ship, in fact, was meant for more terrestrial voyages, yet the white glow from around it, gave the impression of some form of bewitchment. The Galleon was made of wood and metal, with large wings on the port and starboard side. In the rear were mounted the heads of two large enchanted lizards, while the front contained a similar monstrous head. All three would roar and blast fireballs at nearby comets when ordered. Armor clad reptilians manned the deck going about their duties. Atop the stairs to the rear was a small pilot steering the vessel, and behind him stood the captain. He was a large green dinosaur with spiked armor, and a horned helmet. Around one wrist was an iron claw which extended beyond his hand. General Scales was on a mission of revenge.
It has been several years since Fox McCloud had come to Dinosaur Planet and had saved it from doom, but that did not matter to Scales any longer. His rage was set against Andross, the being whom had double crossed and corrupted him. Once the Krozoa spirit was taken from him, and Krystal freed, Scales’ rage was fueled by the memory of Andross. As his army, who had abandoned him, went their own path, Scales placed down his armor and began to plead with the Krozoa. Day and night he sought guidance within the temple, hoping they would give him the strength to destroy Andross, the root cause of the planet’s turmoil. Months passed, and eventually his persistence proved useful as the Krozoa restored his power, and gave his ship, The Galleon, the ability to break through the atmosphere and beyond. As to test his true desires, they charged him to not return to Dinosaur planet until he had slain Andross and returned with a portion of his carcass. Once again adorning his armor he set out to gather as many who would once again follow his leadership. After assembling a moderate army of the Shapclaw tribe once again, he and his followers blasted off into the cosmos in search for Andross. The past year has been spent searching the galaxy for any trace of Andross.
Discouraged at his failure in his mission, Scales ordered one last search of the galaxy before abandoning it entirely and finding a new planet to settle upon. As their journey took them to the northern end of the galaxy, one of the Sharpclaw soldiers cried out amongst the silence.
Soldier: “General Scales, directly ahead!”
Scales: “Wha..What is it? Could it be?”
Soldier: “No sir, it is not Andross, it is something else.”
Scales: “I swear, if this is another star formation you shall become the next cannon ball. Hand me that telescope.”
Soldier: “General, there appears to be a creature above a nearby planet. He seems to be somewhat relative to us, but with wings. There also appears to be a human-like being in blue with him.”
General Scales lifted the telescope to his eye and observed the atmosphere of the nearby planet. Sure enough there was a large reptilian and a small blue-clad being with him. He directed the ship towards these two. Although they were not the object of his mission, perhaps they could provide vital information for him. As The Galleon flew towards Zankor and Geno, the large dinosaur on the bow roared loudly. Turning quickly to see the cause of this disturbance, Zankor floated with his arms crossed awaiting the vessel’s arrival. Geno lifted Dedede’s hammer in preparation for a quick fight as the ship slowly halted in front of them. Scales approached the starboard side with hands held high. He looked at both before addressing Zankor. Although he could feel their power emminating from their bodies, the obvious reptilian resemblance gave him a false sense of security in speaking directly with Zankor.
Scales: “Greetings fellow travelers! I am General Scales, commander of the Sharp Claw Army.”
Geno: “And what gives you the right to address Master Zankor in such a disrespectful manner. You have no idea of the power he contains. General or not, you should be treating him with respect.”
Scales (bowing down): “My apologies, I had no idea. Are you a god?”
Zankor: “My power speaks for itself. What brings you here before me?”
Scales: “I am on a mission of revenge. A bodiless scum by the name of Andross influenced my actions, and double crossed me causing my defeat. I have been granted this chance by the gods of my planet. They have charged me to never return until my revenge is complete.”
Zankor: “Very interesting, I too am here at this planet for revenge and death. Andross you say? I have traveled around the vast majority of this galaxy, and have yet to encounter such a being”
Scales: “Yes we have traversed this galaxy numerous times with no sight of him. If I were to ever lay eyes upon the creature, He would feel the wrath of a thousand storms by my hand.”
Zankor: “You are driven by this vengeful anger. Very good….I am going to propose an opportunity. Join us; accept the power which I can impart within you. Aid me in bringing havoc, death, and destruction to this galaxy. If you can prove useful, together our forces shall hunt down this Andross, and you shall have you revenge. For one may have the ability to hide from a lonely vessel, but with our combined forces, he shall be discovered, and he shall fall.
General scales scratched his chin as he absorbed the information. The promise of aid in achieving his goal of destroying Andross was more than generous. That coupled with some form of boost to his power made the entire thing too good to pass up. Still in the back of his mind, he couldn’t shake the strange feeling that he was going to become a minion of this Zankor to get revenge on someone who had, in essence, made him a minion. Nevertheless, the opportunity was to great. Scales bowed upon one knee as he addressed what was now his Master.
Scales: “I humbly accept your offer. Impart upon me as much power as you see fit, and I shall follow your orders.”
Zankor: “When you keep your promise, I shall uphold mine.”
Zankor closed his eyes and gathered dark energy around him. He opened his palm towards General Scales, and released a beam towards his body. Scales showed minimal signs of pain, though it was excruciating. As Scales’ eyes began to glow read, the black aura surrounded his body. He looked up at his Master and bowed his head in thanks.
Zankor: “Now, for your charge. There is a planet to the western area of this world. It is thick with vegetation and seems far too peaceful. I wish you to go there and stir up as much as you can. Destroy the planet if you come across resistance.”
Scales: “Yes sir! Men move out!”
Zankor:” One last thing, I know you have yet to try your powers of dark energy, but does your mind know of any additional powers, something besides the ability to release energy-based attacks? I have learned that several of my minions, Geno here included, have attained different abilities that I was not aware of. If I am not mistaken, these powers were known rather than mistakenly found. Search your feelings and inform me if this is true or not.”
Scales closed his eyes and began to think. He raised his right hand in front of him and opened his palm wide. As if he had known this for many years, he sent a pulse from his hand a short distance away. A purple portal began to swirl in front of him. Looking around, he picked up a crate beside him and chucked it into the portal. Closing his palm resulted in the portal closing tight and disappearing. Again he opened another nearby, and the crate flew from it and slammed into a nearby Sharpclaw. As the second portal disappeared he looked into the face of Zankor. Although not angry, Zankor did not exactly look pleased either. He floated up and down muttering under his breath.
Scales: “Did I do something wrong?”
Zankor: “No, No, this isn’t anything of your concern. You may go.”
Scales once again inclined his head towards Zankor as he ordered his men onward. As the ship flew into the distance, Zankor still had the same displeased look on his face. He still began to mutter under his breath, occasionally slipping a few audible words. Geno cleared his throat slightly before speaking.
Geno: “Is there some problem? You seem overly concerned by this. I let it go before when I first told you of these powers, but I must ask if you can confide in me what is going on.”
Zankor: “I never anticipated you would receive powers beyond the energy. It’s not as if I am giving these powers to enemies at least, but it does concern me. So far, you have informed me that you can give powers also, Ridley can control fire, and now Scales can produce portals. All of these powers I can fully understand, but there are a few powers that I fear may arise given…..my past. And if that happens……”
Geno: “What powers are these?”
Zankor: “Never you mind. I shall take care of things if they happen to go worse. I see the heroes of this planet are getting closer and closer to each other. excellent.”
Although he dismissed Geno’s question, it did spark his mind. Fire, portals, and the ability to give another power were one thing, but control over metal would be something completely different. Even worse than that, would be a more brilliant than normal mind with protection against mind-reading. Surely no one could have those abilities; surely he was not weak enough to allow those to pass on. His secret must not be revealed, there was no room for error. He needed to be cautious, especially with the sword’s reluctance to wield it’s power.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giygas was flying low over the trees of Sinnoh. He was homing in on a source of great power, however he was sure that such power was well hidden. He stopped for a second to observe his surroundings and began to laugh as he saw a group of brown birds attacking one another. Sure enough, his evil influence was affecting his immediate area. Such had been the norm on other planets he had visited. The weaker minded and those with evil tenancies were influenced simply by his presence. He watched as the spearow began to peck at each others eyes, pull out each other’s feathers, and swoop down on defenseless bugs below. He flew on until he felt the presence of the hidden power below him. Rushing towards the ground, he observed a water-filled crater with the opening to a cave. Fog was issuing from the cave’s mouth which gave an eerie feeling to the entire area.
Giygas knew this to be the place and landed on the ground outside the cave’s mouth. As he looked into the dark cave, he heard some noise from the grass above him. He silently floated upwards to see a bibarrel and a golduck sharing a pile of berries and conversing amongst themselves, completely unaware of what floated behind them. Giygas became annoyed at the seemingly mindless babble issuing from both mouths. He listened for several minutes before finding the pattern in their speech, and quickly began to learn the language of pokemon. One he had learned enough, he laughed at the simplistic speech of these creatures. His laugh startled both pokemon who fled immediately. Irritated that he could not test his aptitude with this new language, Giygas dove down and into the mouth of the cave. Perhaps he could converse with the power source inside.
The inside of this cave was just as he expected. It was foggy, damp, and dark; the perfect location for trying to hide. Immediately before him stood a pillar with ancient carvings in the stone tablet below. He mouthed the words “before 30” as he read what little of the carvings could still be seen. Ignoring the less than helpful tablet, Giygas examined the room. There was nothing else in the room except for a few stones littering the floor and three separate doorways. Deciding to take the east-bound entrance, he came to another empty room with doorways all around. He pursued onwards sensing the power deep within, but as he entered each room, the power’s source shifted areas. Realizing there must be some form of teleportation hindering outsiders to locate the center, Giygas began choosing random doorways. He moved from empty room to empty room for several more minutes, but as he went through a door, he found himself to be standing in front of a pillar once more. He knelt down to read the inscription, but found it to be the same as the entrance. He screamed into the air and blasted the tablet before him. The cave began to rumble from the blast. After it subsided, Giygas began to think. How could he find this power more easily? As if summoned by the quakes, the answer to Giygas’ thoughts appeared. A Haunter poked his head out from the ceiling of the cave to examine the area. Spying him, Giygas decided to test his new language out on this being.
Giygas: “You there, apparition!”
Haunter: “You talking to me?”
Giygas: “I assume you know this cave well.”
Haunter: “Yeah, what’s it to ya?”
Giygas: “I am looking for the source of the power within.”
Haunter: “Good luck of that happening. Turnback Cave is set up to make finding him a complete nightmare. I’d leave now before you make a fool out of yourself.”
Giygas’ eyes began to glow red, as his aura pulsed. He smirked as he gathered energy into a large ball and held it above his head mere inches from the ceiling.
Giygas: “You will take me to him, or else I shall use my power to crush this cave, its power source, and you in it as well.”
Haunter: “WOAH, Chill out! No need for hostilities you psycho. I’ll take you. Follow me.”
Giygas absorbed the energy back into his body as the Haunter floated into the west-bound room. He had a plan to teach this intruder a lesson. The two floated on through several rooms and passed two pillars which Giygas had not seen in his first attempt. The Haunter stopped in front of the opening to the next room and addressed Giygas.
Haunter: “The next room holds the power you seek. I warn you though; he does not take kindly to prideful spirits. Give him respect. He is a legend after all.”
Giygas sneered at the thought of respecting he had never met before. The haunter turned around and entered the room. Giygas followed closely, and as he entered the room he saw nothing but rock covering the floor. He began to look around for any sign of the Haunter, but he had disappeared. Suddenly, Haunter appeared from the wall behind him. Cackling loudly, he gave a rude gesture on both hands before disappearing back into the wall. Giygas had been tricked. Even more furious with his current situation, he flew back into the previous room in pursuit of the ghost, but when he appeared through the door, he was not in the previous room, but back at the beginning of the cave. Dark Energy and fury pumped through his veins as he stood shaking until the room once again began to tremble. Closing his eyes and focusing on the energy source, he faced its direction, held his arms out and blasted a beam of energy into the wall. The blast was powerful enough and accurate enough to create a tunnel through the cave without causing it to cave in. Satisfied with this solution, Giygas floated over to the opening and peered in. The path created was so long that he could not see the end. He rushed through the tunnel as fast as he could until he could see the foggy room at the end. As he emerged from his tunnel, he was met face to face with a large six-legged winged dragon, Giratina.
It was more than obvious that Gigyas’ arrival, and destruction were not welcome by the legend, who immediately began to attack with dragon breath attacks and shadow claws. Giygas took a more defensive position of blocking the claws and rushing away from the flames. As Giygas circled Giratina, the dragon swung its tail knocking the alien into the nearby wall. Jumping into the air, Giratina slashed Giygas once with a shadow claw and pinned him down with his other legs. Giygas focused his energy and sent a blast of dark power into Giratina’s face. The shot knocked Giratina over freeing Giygas who began to float above the dragon. Shaking his head Giratina looked up, but did not attack. He instead began to speak with this stranger.
Giratina: “Who are you, and why have you come here?”
Giygas: “I have been called many names and have been considered the embodiment of evil. I am Giygas. I once was dead, till my master restored my life. He charged me to help with his work, and my journey has brought me here. I have the ability to scan an area, and even the mind. Upon arriving here, I immediately picked up two power sources, yours, and another high in the atmosphere. My current companion has gone to investigate that, and I here. What are you called?”
Giratina: “I am Giratina. I am from a world unlike this one. It is the reverse of this planet. Some call it a Torn world where the laws of physics and nature do not apply. They wouldn’t exactly be wrong in that description. Although I am a dragon by appearance, I am more characteristic of a ghost. I am essentially the guardian of the dead. This cave as it is called is no cave at all. It is an ancient graveyard. You have desecrated the grounds, and have therefore angered me and the spirits within. Leave now, before I am forced to add a grave with your name upon it. I sense a great evil within you, something far worse than I have ever seen in my thousands of years. The air itself is filled with the foul stench of your evil.”
Giygas: “You’re too kind. Would you hear me out before you attempt to destroy me?”
Giratina: “Talk fast, my patience is weary.”
Giygas: “As I mentioned before, my master restored me back to life from the dead. I earlier told you that I was charged to follow out my master’s work. I shall now divulge that purpose to you. I, along with several others, was given power to cause chaos and destruction to planets. It is by our hands that the entire galaxy will fall. That includes you and this planet. You appear to be an extremely talented and powerful being, and I would hate to have to destroy you. I would rather fight along side you.”
Giratina: “You come here and damage these sacred grounds, and you expect me to join your cause? You must be delusional.”
Giygas: “I warn you, if you refuse to join us, you and this place shall come to an end.”
Giratina: “Why not try your luck now? Words mean nothing without action. You’re wasting my time.”
Giygas: “As if time is so precious to a ghost. I would attempt now, but….i am…..too weak. The energy blast took the majority of my power. If I could tempt your patience but a few minutes longer, I would like to sit down and rest. Upon gaining my strength I shall leave you and your graveyard alone.”
Giratina fumed to himself before nodding his head. Giygas’s presence was disturbing enough for the short time he was already here, but perhaps only a few more minutes of silence wouldn’t hurt. Giygas sat down in the corner and hid his face from view. He smiled devilishly, ecstatic that his lie had temporarily fooled the ghostly dragon. Knowing well from the display of the spearow earlier that his evil aura still influenced those around him, Giygas knew that it would only be a matter of time before Giratina’s spirit would become weak enough that he could be possessed fully. Giratina paced back and forth within the room. He was quickly becoming angrier for no reason. As the minutes passed, Giygas continued to sit on the stone floor, pulsing his evil aura occasionally to quicken the process. Suddenly, Giratina roared into the air out of anger. Facing Giygas, his eyes began to glow slightly as the evil air weakened his spirit.
Giratina: “Get out NOW, or I shall destroy you on the spot!”
Giygas: “No, I’m afraid I cannot do that. I came here searching for a powerful ally, but what I found was something even better, a guardian to the gates of death itself. You will prove more useful that you shall ever know. Of course, you will barely be able to know or remember anything at all.”
Giratina rushed towards Giygas, but was too slow. Giygas had placed one tentacular arm to his head and the other stretched before him. A slow dark beam shot at Giratina’s heart. He began to jerk as he floated into the air. Giygas held strong to the beam as a dark aura began to collect around Giratina. Giratina struggled against the attack, but resistance was futile. Within a manner or seconds, Giygas had fully possessed Giratina. The ghostly dragon’s body became still as it was lowered back to the ground. Giratina’s eyes shone a bright red as he stood before Giygas who was quite pleased with himself. Floating around his new minion he decided to test him with a couple questions.
Giygas: “Giratina, who is your master?”
Giratina: “I serve you, Master Giygas.”
Giygas: “Good, I have an order for you. You are to follow me; we shall exit this wretched place, and completely destroy it. Is that clear?”
Giratina: “Yes, I shall follow as directed.”
Giygas laughed triumphantly as the two left the room. Upon leaving Giratina’s room, they found themselves in the opening area once again. The Haunter who had angered Giygas was floating around the top of the pillar still laughing at the trick he had played. He stopped circling when he heard Giratina’s footsteps enter the room. In fear, he floated into the ceiling and watched. He was excited to see Giratina, but the ominous glow and general daze indicated foul play. Fearing the worst, he lowered himself into the room as both exited Turnback Cave. Giratina and Giygas flew into the sky above. Simulataneously, they charged up attacks and sent them shooting towards Sendoff Spring. The area exploded leaving only the rubble of stone and trees. The ancient cemetery of Turnback Cave was destroyed. Giygas began to look around the skies for any sign of his companion, Ridley. To the East, he could see the smoke of a large volcano. Realizing it must be caused by the purple dragon, Giygas commanded his new minion to follow. Together they tore through the sky.
Rocks began to shift in the rubble of Turnback cave, as golduck, bibarrel, and bronzong attempted to escape with their lives, as well as save those who could be rescued. Several pokemon were injured; a few lay dead beneath large boulders. Weeping and Sorrow was heard throughout the area as the pokemon tried to save all they could. Haunter rose above the rocks and began to look around. Neither the stranger nor Giratina could be seen. Something needed to be done, now that this stranger had corrupted the ghostly legend. He had heard of a pokemon council that was held in Kanto and headed by the legendary Mewtwo. Perhaps he could get there in time to warn those who could help.
The vessel was flying through space as quickly as it could. Its appearance was unusual, especially for craft traveling in space.
