Chapter 21: The Struggle for the Mushroom Kingdom
Deep within Wario’s Castle, the still scene was broken by a line of light appearing in the air. Slowly a door emerged with a flat handle. The door cracked open as Mr. Game and Watch’s Face peered from it. He stuck out his hand to ring his bell. He kept ringing for a couple of minutes with no response. Game and Watch lowered his head in disappointment and began to think. Mario wasn’t at Peach’s castle, and he wasn’t here, so where could he be. Suddenly it hit him. Mario just might be fighting Bowser at his castle. It was a long shot but he would have to try it, because as every moment went by, Utopia slipped further into despair. As he slammed the door shut, the air in Wario’s Castle went back to normal.

On board the Pirate Ship, Midna landed on Wolf Link’s back as he approached Link and Tetra.
Tetra: “I’m gonna ask once more. Who are you?”
Midna: “The name’s Midna. I’m the princess of twilight. There’s a lot to tell you, but I’ll give you the short version for right now. According to the legend of our people, there were set place great barriers around Hyrule, dividing it into four areas. Three of which were very similar each with their own trio of Link Zelda and Ganondorf. You’re obviously Link from the green garb, and I’m guessing you are the incarnation of Zelda here. The fourth area, well, let’s not talk about that one right now. It’s just….they shouldn’t have ever….anyway.
Something has caused these barriers to break. I’m not sure if our Ganondorf is behind this, but he is completely missing from our Hyrule. Not long after these barriers were broken, strange looking creatures began walking abroad, and eventually word reached us that a ship, your ship, had captured some zoras from our region. I and Link here came to investigate while Zelda went towards the other Hyrule.”
Tetra: “The name’s Tetra, don’t start pulling that Zelda stuff on me. Wait, you said LINK and you? Is that wolf, Link? So everyone’s some sort of animal in your area?”
Midna: “Heh No, it’s just something he has to do to walk around in Twilight. Here I’ll show you.”
Midna flew above Wolf Link and spun around once. Suddenly the wolf who stood before them transformed back into a man. Link unsheathed his sword and stood before them.
Midna: “See, I told you…but now this is going to get confusing if we just address Link, so I’m gonna start calling the little one, Toon Link, because this world just looks so strange.”
Toon Link: “Is that the best you could come up with? TOON link? Why not Wind Waker Link, or the Hero of Wind? Oh well, whatever. Is that blue creature from your land as well?”
Midna: “No, I’ve never seen anything like him before. If he’s not from here and he’s not from Twilight Hyrule, I highly doubt he’s from the other Hyrule. So, umm Sonic is it? You aren’t from Termina are you?”
Sonic: “HUH? I’ve never even heard of that place. I’m from Mobius.”
Tetra: “Then exactly how did you get here?”
Sonic: “Well I’m not really sure. Dr. Eggman was continuing his constant Eggmanland scheme. He had tons of robots all around Mobius and somehow managed to re-assemble the robot version of myself, Metal Sonic. Tails and I knew the world would be in danger so we set out to stop him. The best way to do that was to gather the chaos emeralds. I’m sure you don’t know what they are so I’ll explain. They are these magic gemstones that give you ultimate power. Well I had gathered all seven of the chaos emeralds as Knuckles had instructed me and was just about to use their power when a white portal appeared and began to suck me into it. I began to run at full speed, but a large boulder smacked into me as the portal’s power sucked it in. Next thing I knew I was crashing down into this ocean and drowning till that crane saved me.”
Link: “So you’re from a complete other world? Interesting…I wonder if that has anything to do with the barriers.”
Midna: “I’m sure it does. Zelda..er…sorry Tetra, I suggest we set a course for our region of Hyrule. Zelda has already run to the other Hyrule to do the same. We need the major forces to meet together and discuss the future of Hyrule and Termina. Besides, we need to return these Zora’s back there anyway.”
Toon Link: “Sounds like a good idea.”
Tetra: “I don’t like it. We have enough to deal with at the moment, but I guess we do need to take those zoras back. And we need to figure out what should become of Sonic.”
She walked over and unlocked the cells of the various creatures she had captured. Those who recognized others from their region grouped together to discuss what was going on. Sonic moved over to stand with midna. Suddenly, a dense fog began to issue down the stairs from the ship’s deck. Everyone began to look around confused by this development. Suddenly a voice rang out in the fog.
Pirate: “Tetra, Link, come quick! There’s trouble out here.”
Quickly, Tetra, Toon Link, Midna, Link, and Sonic rushed up the stairs to see what was going on. Immediately beside them on starboard was a very large wooden vessel. The fog seemed to imamate from it. There was a large golden skull on the front of the ship. The mast was tattered and torn. Tetra’s crew looked fairly creeped out.
Pirate: “Boss, I think it’s the dreaded Ghost Ship. They say it lurks in these waters.”
Tetra: “Quit being an idiot! There’s no such thing, there never has been. It’s just another set of pirates who have spread these rumors to scare everyone off. They are probably hiding a lot of treasure on board. I’m going to hop over there and discover just who these people are.”
Bound and determined, Tetra jumped from her ship to that of the other. She became lost in the fog. Suddenly a lighting bolt struck as Tetra let out a scream. They could see what looked like a purple portal pulling her into darkness.
Tetra: “Link! Help me!”
Toon Link: “NOOO!”
Sonic: “Time to jet!”
Midna: “Ah hell no, I don’t have time for this.”
Sonic jumped into the air and sped across the deck of the Ghost Ship. He snatched Tetra and began to run at top speed away from the purple vortex. It’s power had a strong pull on them, but Sonic’s speed proved to be the better. As he shot back across the deck onto Tetra’s ship, Midna rose up into the air and produced a portal into twilight on the water beneath the Ghost Ship. It sunk down through the portal and out of sight.
Midna: “Let’s see how it enjoys life in Twilight for a few.”
Tetra: “I…thank you.”
Sonic: “Piece of cake. You saved me from drowning.”
Tetra dusted herself off and continued to speak with Midna and Link. Eventually they talked her into steering the vessel towards Twilight Hyrule. Sonic stood at the bow taking in all the sights of this new world as Link and Toon Link practiced Swordplay. The pirate ship floated on north bound.

Bowser’s Castle was hustling with the usual activity. All sort of minions were patrolling about, but not in their normal quiet pace. The news that Bowser was helping Mario, showing him the golden turnips, and flying off in a hovercraft appeared to be the topic around every corner. Even the piranha plants who were normally content to stay in their pipes had emerged and were conversing with nearby troops about this strange set of circumstances. Only those most devoted to their duties kept their constant vigil. A Hammer Bro was patrolling around the parameter when a burst of light appeared along the wall. He jumped back and held a hammer high as the light drew a line which eventually protruded a small flat knob. He reached for the knob but was met with the door smacking him in the face. Mr. Game and Watch jumped out leaving the door wide open to see the stunned Hammer Bro.
Hammer Bro: “Woah there buddy, watch where you…HEY how’d you do that?”
GW: “No time to explain, not that you would understand anyway. I’m guessing by the general calm that Mario isn’t here?”
Hammer Bro: “Funny you mention that…he was here with a group of strange people. They all went to the dungeons and then flew off towards Yoshi’s Island. Very weird.”
GW: “REALLY? That’s great! I’m glad I found you. Thank you so very much. Sorry about hitting you.”
Before the hammer bro could say anything Mr. Game and Watch jumped back into the open door and slammed it shut.

As Geno floated mere inches above the ground, he made eye contact with each and every one of his opponents. He was determined to murder each of them. The atmosphere was still as a small breeze blew by. It was the last calm before the storm. Each individual was not moving a muscle, waiting for the battle ahead. Suddenly, Geno burst into the crowd of heroes. They quickly jumped out of the way, but Geno grabbed ahold of Luigi and King Dedede. At lightning speed, he lifted both above his head and slammed the two together. He then tossed them both down at the ground with such force that it created a small crater. Rising into the air he sent several blasts of energy after them. Dust clouded the area immediately. It was so dense that the heroes could barely see the person beside them. Kirby and Metaknight took to the sky. Geno floated nearby waiting for someone to emerge from the cloud. As they made their way towards him, he began blasting energy at the flying heroes. Kirby condensed into a rock to endure the attack. Metaknight, however, used his dimensional cape to teleport directly behind Geno. He swung his sword at the puppet, but struck only the air, as Geno had slid to the side. Geno spun around and kicked Metaknight which sent him spiraling out of control towards the ground.
The dust was beginning to clear along the ground near the crater. Slippy began shooting his laser up at Geno who was avoiding each shot. Luigi and Dedede had just regained consciousness again. As Luigi raised his head out of the crater, it was immediately met by Kirby in rock form falling on him. Luigi slumped over unconscious once more. Kirby regained his form and looked over at the newly out of commission Luigi with an expression of both astonishment and apology before rejoining Mario. Dedede snickered as he climbed out of the crater and joined the group. Metaknight regained control as he slid along the grass. Slippy was still unleashing barrages of laser fire as Geno swooped down for a second run against the heroes. This time, they decided to try an offensive approach. As Geno rushed towards them, Peach tossed a turnip directly at his head. Waluigi followed soon with a bobomb. Both made contact with the puppet but had no effect, he was still coming strong. Mario began shooting fireballs beside Slippy. Yoshi joined in by tossing a few Eggs which exploded near him. This too didn’t faze Geno. He rushed into the center of the heroes, stopped dead in his tracks, and released an energy wave all around him. The heroes were sent flying into the air. Dedede and Bowser quickly regained their footing as well as Metaknight. They began to charge Geno. Bowser began to breathe fire at the puppet as he moved in closer. This set Geno on the defensive. He jumped backwards only to be met by Metaknight’s Drill Rush. Although the attack did very little damage, it did push Geno to the side and right into the striking zone for Dedede’s charged jet hammer. Metaknight used his cape once more to teleport away as Dedede slammed his hammer into Geno. This was the first attack that proved useful, as Geno showed signs of pain and was sent flying into a nearby tree.
Luigi once again stirred. Wondering what exactly had happened, he peered nervously out of the crater. He could not see any sign of Geno immediately by and figured it would be safe for him to emerge and join the fight. As he stood up on the grass, he dusted off his overalls, but as he looked down, he was quickly met by the flying body of Yoshi. The impact sent both directly into the crater. Luigi swore loudly into the air as he pushed Yoshi off him and jumped out of the hole, determined not to get stuck in it again. One by one each of the fighters grouped together once more, peering into the forest where Geno was sent flying. Just as they began to wonder what could be in store, a large surge of energy uprooted trees and sent them flying into the air. Although they could not see him, they knew that Geno was now beginning to get angry. Geno sped towards the group as fast as he could. Slippy attempted once more to shoot him, but the energy surrounding him blocked all attacks. Abandoning the attempt, he holstered his gun and pulled out the reflector. Geno held out his fist and slammed right into King Dedede sending him flying into a nearby hillside. He then sped around the group in clockwise formation. He managed to grab hold of Peach, Yoshi, Metaknight, and Wario. Tossing all four into the air he shot upwards and began delivering consecutive punches and kicks to all of them. His speed was so intense that the four could not even be blasted into the surrounding areas because he would be delivering another blow directly behind them. Mario was desperate for this torture to stop. He could not stand to see his love, and his companion being pummeled like a hackey sack.
Waluigi reacted quickly by lighting more bobombs and tossing them upwards at Geno. Although the blasts did not harm him, it did catch his attention. Abandoning his fight with the four, he allowed their bodies to fly in whatever direction they pleased as he directed his attention towards Kirby, Luigi, Mario, Slippy, Walugi, and Bowser. Geno conjured up a large ball of energy and shot it towards the group. This was exactly the moment Slippy had been waiting for. He ran out in front to meet the attack and turned on his deflector. As the attack hit Slippy’s deflector it pushed him back slightly. Holding strong he pushed back against the dark ball and shot it back at Geno. Slippy’s reflection of this came as a surprise to the puppet who received the full blow of his own attack. Purely outraged at this point he swept down to the ground and pointed both fists at the group before him. Suddenly his hands and part of his arms detached from his body and went streaming for the small group. The flying fists began to weave in and out, each hero barely missing their attacks. Bowser was the unfortunate recipient of both fists. As they hit him in the stomach he was sent flying into yet another nearby tree. As both fists reattached to their master, Geno send another barrage of energy at the remaining heroes. Kirby, Slippy, and Waluigi were sent blasting into the bushes nearby. Luigi however shot right back to that same crater he knew so very well. The only one left standing before Geno now, was Mario. They began to circle around each other, eyes locked. Simultaneously they ran at each other, energy, fireballs and fist flying. Mario used all he had in an attempt to fend off Geno, but he was too powerful. Geno grabbed Mario by the feet and began to swing him around. Faster and faster he spun until he let go of Mario sending him flying into the nearby forest.
Deep within the forest of Yoshi’s Island, a beam of light began to appear on a tree trunk. The same door that had been appearing all over the area appeared once more. Mr. Game and Watch flung open the door and jumped out of it looking around for anyone who could tell him where Mario was. His answer was closer than he thought. Mr. Game and Watch turned his head as he heard screaming in the sky and before he knew what happened, Mario landed directly on Mr. Game and Watch.
Mario: “Mama Mia!”
GW: “Well that makes things easier.”
Mario: “Game and Watch? How did….why are… I don’t have time to talk.”
GW: “No you must listen to me. Utopia is in danger and I didn’t know who to turn to.”
Mario: “Utopia? OH you mean that experiment? Well I don’t have time for science right now. The world has gone crazy. Geno has gained power from some Destroyer guy and is trying to kill us. He’s gotten really powerful and has this black energy around him. He’s gone pure evil”
GW: “Ok maybe he did too….”
Mario: “HUH?”
Before Mr. Game and Watch could explain further, the trees directly in front of him were beginning to split. A definite path could be seen that would only have been made by Geno flying in to finish Mario Off. Mario and Mr. Game and Watch looked as the path got closer and closer. As Geno came into sight, he spotted Mario and continued directly towards him. He had his hand held out and gathering black energy. Mario braced himself for the impact, but something happened he hadn’t anticipated. Mr. Game and Watch suddenly jumped in front of Mario and swung his judgment hammer. Due to both his quick moving and Geno’s ignorance of his presence, Mr. Game and Watch’s hammer made contact with Geno’s head. Suddenly an ear piercing screech was let out as the number nine appeared above Mr. Game and Watch’s head and Geno was sent speeding back in the direction that he came from.
Mario: “WOAH!”
GW: “HEH, that was lucky…I hardly ever get that number.”
Mario: “Wait, you did that not knowing you were going to get that high of an attack?”
GW: “Well yeah, cause your survival is much more important than my own, if nothing else than for the sake of Utopia. We have tried, but we have failed completely.”
Mario: “Well, can you do me a favor. I’m sure Geno will not be happy about what just happened and will definitely try to destroy the whole planet now like they did to Pop Star. I need you to use your magic door to go to the center of this island, Peach’s Castle and Bowser’s Castle. Round up all the Yoshi, the toads, and all of Bowser’s Minions. Keep them within your world so they can be safe incase this world is destroyed. After this battle, we will discuss Utopia”
GW: “Sure thing. It shouldn’t take long at all.”
Mr. Game and Watch hoped back into the doorway and slammed it shut in his mission to help the toads, koopas and all other manner of creatures. Mario began to run back towards the original fighting site. He had wasted enough time talking to Game and Watch. As he followed the path Geno had so conveniently made for him, he found all his friends back on their feet looking wearily at a large crater in the ground. As he rejoined them, Geno’s hand grasped hold of the edge of the crater. He lifted himself back up to level ground. He was shaken by that sudden surprise but was now angrier than ever. He screamed into the air and began to pulse more energy through his body. Geno then released a large beam of energy that the heroes barely missed. As he began to rush at them once more, a beam of light shone down upon him. Somehow this beam of light had him trapped where he was. He tried to shoot energy beams out, but the only diffused right before him. The heroes looked just as stunned as Geno.
Geno: “What is the meaning of this?”
Voice: “Dear Friend, we have come to liberate you.”
Geno: “You again….be gone from me.”
Voice: “We gave fair warning to the darkness, and it simply made itself more prominent. This time we shall take action.”
Suddenly spiraling beams of light shone down upon Geno. As each entered his body, the black aura around him seemed to diminish quickly. The spirits of Star Road were attempted to purge the darkness from Geno’s body, but the process was slow and painful. Mario and the others watched for several minutes as Geno cried out in pain from the light. Finally, Geno’s eyes ceased to be red and he fell to the ground. The light barrier lifted as the voice spoke once more.
Voice: “We have done all we can. May your spirit have the strength left to fight off the darkness.”
Slippy: “OK? So let me get this straight. Some weird voice says they have come to purge him of this evil then basically admit they didn’t do much of anything to begin with?”
DDD: “Well, remember what I said. His darkness has some of the same properties as the darkness that has possessed me. It never really leaves. It’s all a matter of whether or not you can suppress it.”
The heroes made their way over to Geno. Peach crouched down and tapped him on the shoulder. He reacted suddenly with a gasp of air and looking around at those around him.
Geno: “Mario! I…I have to tell you.”
Mario: “What have you done?”
Geno: “Well, I was in the forest minding my own business when this golden colored turnip smacks me in the face. The juice gave me power, but I was pretty mad at whoever did this, so I went to go find out. When I get to the end I see a bunch of Bowser’s troops harassing a toad so I tried to save him. After doing so this guy in a cape shows up and says he wants me to help him destroy the worlds and that he would keep this one safe because of my services. So I joined in hopes of being able to warn you about all of this, but then something happened. He infused me with this dark power. It drove me mad. I can still feel it inside me like grime inside of a pot. My heart and mind could see all the terrible things I was doing, but the darkness had taken over. Now on top of that, my new master has transformed into a giant dragon beast and is very angry. I just had to tell you how sorry I am, and perhaps you could find a way to correct this.”
Peach: “It’s ok, don’t worry, you just need to fight off that darkness.”
Geno: “I can’t. It’s….too….powerful.”
Geno’s spirit was already losing the battle. He winced in pain as the darkness began to surge through his body once more.
Geno: “PLEASE, Kill me before I do anything more. PLEASE!”
He barely had time to inhale as a large barrier surrounded him. He screamed in severe pain as he rose into the sky. His dark aura was returning, his eyes once again were blood red. The heroes began to attack the barrier around him but with no use. They could do nothing but see their friend being taken over once more. With one last scream, the barrier broke, and Geno once again floated before them purely evil. With the memory of the light fresh in his demonic mind, he conjured an enormous ball of energy and tossed it into a nearby island completely destroying it. Geno looked down at the group and began to laugh maniacally.
Geno: “Pitiful. Do you think a weak light power could stop me? I will now destroy your entire planet. I know you have that ship, but just try to reach space before I blow this whole thing up. No ship that size can get speeds that great!”
And with that, Geno blasted off into the atmosphere.
Slippy: “To the Great Fox!”
Luigi: “We’ll never make it in time. We’re doomed!”
Bowser: “Have you already forgotten? We poured some of the golden turnip potion into the fuel chamber. This baby will get us out of here in no time thanks to that.”
One by one they piled into the Great Fox. Slippy ran on ahead to inform Peppy, while Metaknight raised the boarding platform. Everyone followed Kirby and Metaknight to the where Peppy and Slippy were piloting the ship. Peppy angled the ship to begin ascent, but was caught by surprise when the Golden turnip potion began to flow through. The second it did, the ship blasted off towards space at speeds greater than it had ever experienced. Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, and Yoshi took one last look at their beloved Mushroom Kingdom as they sped off towards the stars.
True to his word, Geno was already high in space above the Mushroom Kingdom gathering energy into a ball. He was going to destroy those pitiful fools. Perhaps if he were to destroy his former planet, the memories would cease and he could go on with his destruction. After he had gathered a ball three hundred times the size of him, he released it down at the Mushroom Kingdom. The planet exploded upon impact. Very pleased with himself, Geno began to laugh as chunks of earth were flying by. However, his happiness quickly turned into confusion and outrage as he witnessed the same large ship he had seen on the ground below weaving through the rubble towards him. The Great Fox had made it out just in time. It was Peppy’s time to give Geno a taste of battle as he began firing the ship’s lasers at him. These lasers were very large and powerful but easier to avoid. Shot after shot was sent Geno’s way who was avoiding all of them.
Peppy: “Dagnabbit, he’s too fast for these lasers, even with this turnip juice”
Peach: “What are we going to do if he decides to get on the ship?”
Slippy: “Well we’re just going to have to hope he doesn……hey why is the hanger door open?”
Peppy: “I never opened it, someone else in here must have.”
They looked around at each other but one person from their party was missing. King Dedede was not amongst them. Metaknight quickly flew out of the door and down towards the hanger followed closely by everyone else. When they arrived at the hanger, the door was indeed wide open. The small group of waddle doos was standing at the edge looking out of it. A short distance away was a strangely moving arwing.
Kirby: “Oh no!”
On board the Arwing, King Dedede was fumbling around with the controls. He did not know how this stupid thing worked but he knew what needed to be done. The arwing was weaving in and out while randomly speeding forward. The line across Dedede’s stomach was showing once again. Being around Geno for such a length of time had once again called out to the Dark Matter. He thought to himself that Geno asked to die in order to rid him of his demons. He too had done several things, and perhaps this could rectify those horrible things he did whilst under the control of the Dark Matter. Suddenly the arwing’s intercom began to buzz. Dedede looked around and saw a flashing light and pressed it. A familiar voice was heard.
Metaknight: “Just what exactly do you think you are doing? Get that thing back in here before you kill yourself How exactly did you figure out those controls?”
DDD: “No can do. I know what needs to be done. Watch out for the Waddle Doos for me.”
With those words he winced as the Dark Matter was trying to take over him once more. Grasping hold of the controls he began to get the hang of this thing. He circled wide until he had both the Great Fox and Geno in his vision. Geno was still dodging large energy beams. King Dedede took a large breath before hitting the boosters. As he began to speed towards Geno he discovered the weapons system and began firing lasers of his own. Geno was hit by a couple before producing another barrier to protect him. Dedede still speeding towards him pressed the left button which sent a missile streaming towards Geno. Geno’s barrier took the full force of this. He barely had time to react when the Arwing made contact with Geno’s Body. Shrapnel was sent flying as the aircraft exploded upon impact. The occupants of the Great Fox were staring in disbelief, but as the debris settled, the saw Geno completely unharmed with Dedede struggling from the choke hold of the puppet.
Geno: “May you be the first example of what happens with you mess with us.”
Geno kicked Dedede hard in the stomach, jumped backwards and pointes his finger at him. Suddenly a large purst of energy shot from his finger like a bullet. It passed completely through Dedede. Metaknight screamed into the air as they watched this happen. Blood issued from both Dedede’s mouth and stomach as his eyes went grey and he loosened the grip on his mallet. The King of Pop Star floated in space dead, free of his demons. Geno grasped ahold of Dedede’s hammer and turned around to address the Great Fox.
Geno: “This is a warning to you all. Destruction and death await you if you continue to resist. You shall end up like this penguin. I can sence my master’s presence nearby, and I leave to join him. Take this time to re-assess your situation.”
Geno looked at his new trophy weapon and smiled before blasting off towards the north.
Peach: “He said his master was nearby? Where could he be?”
Peppy: “Well the closest planets to this were Pop Star and Hyrule. Judging by his flight path I’m guessing he’s going there.”
Mario: “Well then we must go there and help Link and the others.”
Metaknight:”So we shall, but I must first do something.”

In the midst of the floating rubble that was once the mushroom kingdom, a beam of light appeard as Mr. Game and Watch’s Door materialized in space. He flung open the door and began to jump out but was shocked at the scene. Mere seconds before he had been at Bowser’s Castle but now the whole world had been destroyed. He lowered his head in sadness. At least he had been able to save many Yoshi, Toad, and minions of Bowser. But whether Mario had survived he did not know. He shut the door quietly as he began his search once more for the heroic plumber in other worlds.

On a moon nearby to the Mushroom Kingdom’s ruin, a lonesome grave with a large stone appeared. Metaknight used his newly powered sword to carve the headstone. The heores stood around for a few minutes in silence until all but metaknight were left. He sheathed his sword and began to back away from the grave.
Metaknight: “Farewell, My King.”

Dead - Boshi, Ganondorf of Time, Ganondorf of the Sea, King Dedede
Deep within Wario’s Castle, the still scene was broken by a line of light appearing in the air. Slowly a door emerged with a flat handle. The door cracked open as Mr. Game and Watch’s Face peered from it. He stuck out his hand to ring his bell. He kept ringing for a couple of minutes with no response. Game and Watch lowered his head in disappointment and began to think. Mario wasn’t at Peach’s castle, and he wasn’t here, so where could he be. Suddenly it hit him. Mario just might be fighting Bowser at his castle. It was a long shot but he would have to try it, because as every moment went by, Utopia slipped further into despair. As he slammed the door shut, the air in Wario’s Castle went back to normal.

On board the Pirate Ship, Midna landed on Wolf Link’s back as he approached Link and Tetra.
Tetra: “I’m gonna ask once more. Who are you?”
Midna: “The name’s Midna. I’m the princess of twilight. There’s a lot to tell you, but I’ll give you the short version for right now. According to the legend of our people, there were set place great barriers around Hyrule, dividing it into four areas. Three of which were very similar each with their own trio of Link Zelda and Ganondorf. You’re obviously Link from the green garb, and I’m guessing you are the incarnation of Zelda here. The fourth area, well, let’s not talk about that one right now. It’s just….they shouldn’t have ever….anyway.
Something has caused these barriers to break. I’m not sure if our Ganondorf is behind this, but he is completely missing from our Hyrule. Not long after these barriers were broken, strange looking creatures began walking abroad, and eventually word reached us that a ship, your ship, had captured some zoras from our region. I and Link here came to investigate while Zelda went towards the other Hyrule.”
Tetra: “The name’s Tetra, don’t start pulling that Zelda stuff on me. Wait, you said LINK and you? Is that wolf, Link? So everyone’s some sort of animal in your area?”
Midna: “Heh No, it’s just something he has to do to walk around in Twilight. Here I’ll show you.”
Midna flew above Wolf Link and spun around once. Suddenly the wolf who stood before them transformed back into a man. Link unsheathed his sword and stood before them.
Midna: “See, I told you…but now this is going to get confusing if we just address Link, so I’m gonna start calling the little one, Toon Link, because this world just looks so strange.”
Toon Link: “Is that the best you could come up with? TOON link? Why not Wind Waker Link, or the Hero of Wind? Oh well, whatever. Is that blue creature from your land as well?”
Midna: “No, I’ve never seen anything like him before. If he’s not from here and he’s not from Twilight Hyrule, I highly doubt he’s from the other Hyrule. So, umm Sonic is it? You aren’t from Termina are you?”
Sonic: “HUH? I’ve never even heard of that place. I’m from Mobius.”
Tetra: “Then exactly how did you get here?”
Sonic: “Well I’m not really sure. Dr. Eggman was continuing his constant Eggmanland scheme. He had tons of robots all around Mobius and somehow managed to re-assemble the robot version of myself, Metal Sonic. Tails and I knew the world would be in danger so we set out to stop him. The best way to do that was to gather the chaos emeralds. I’m sure you don’t know what they are so I’ll explain. They are these magic gemstones that give you ultimate power. Well I had gathered all seven of the chaos emeralds as Knuckles had instructed me and was just about to use their power when a white portal appeared and began to suck me into it. I began to run at full speed, but a large boulder smacked into me as the portal’s power sucked it in. Next thing I knew I was crashing down into this ocean and drowning till that crane saved me.”
Link: “So you’re from a complete other world? Interesting…I wonder if that has anything to do with the barriers.”
Midna: “I’m sure it does. Zelda..er…sorry Tetra, I suggest we set a course for our region of Hyrule. Zelda has already run to the other Hyrule to do the same. We need the major forces to meet together and discuss the future of Hyrule and Termina. Besides, we need to return these Zora’s back there anyway.”
Toon Link: “Sounds like a good idea.”
Tetra: “I don’t like it. We have enough to deal with at the moment, but I guess we do need to take those zoras back. And we need to figure out what should become of Sonic.”
She walked over and unlocked the cells of the various creatures she had captured. Those who recognized others from their region grouped together to discuss what was going on. Sonic moved over to stand with midna. Suddenly, a dense fog began to issue down the stairs from the ship’s deck. Everyone began to look around confused by this development. Suddenly a voice rang out in the fog.
Pirate: “Tetra, Link, come quick! There’s trouble out here.”
Quickly, Tetra, Toon Link, Midna, Link, and Sonic rushed up the stairs to see what was going on. Immediately beside them on starboard was a very large wooden vessel. The fog seemed to imamate from it. There was a large golden skull on the front of the ship. The mast was tattered and torn. Tetra’s crew looked fairly creeped out.
Pirate: “Boss, I think it’s the dreaded Ghost Ship. They say it lurks in these waters.”
Tetra: “Quit being an idiot! There’s no such thing, there never has been. It’s just another set of pirates who have spread these rumors to scare everyone off. They are probably hiding a lot of treasure on board. I’m going to hop over there and discover just who these people are.”
Bound and determined, Tetra jumped from her ship to that of the other. She became lost in the fog. Suddenly a lighting bolt struck as Tetra let out a scream. They could see what looked like a purple portal pulling her into darkness.
Tetra: “Link! Help me!”
Toon Link: “NOOO!”
Sonic: “Time to jet!”
Midna: “Ah hell no, I don’t have time for this.”
Sonic jumped into the air and sped across the deck of the Ghost Ship. He snatched Tetra and began to run at top speed away from the purple vortex. It’s power had a strong pull on them, but Sonic’s speed proved to be the better. As he shot back across the deck onto Tetra’s ship, Midna rose up into the air and produced a portal into twilight on the water beneath the Ghost Ship. It sunk down through the portal and out of sight.
Midna: “Let’s see how it enjoys life in Twilight for a few.”
Tetra: “I…thank you.”
Sonic: “Piece of cake. You saved me from drowning.”
Tetra dusted herself off and continued to speak with Midna and Link. Eventually they talked her into steering the vessel towards Twilight Hyrule. Sonic stood at the bow taking in all the sights of this new world as Link and Toon Link practiced Swordplay. The pirate ship floated on north bound.

Bowser’s Castle was hustling with the usual activity. All sort of minions were patrolling about, but not in their normal quiet pace. The news that Bowser was helping Mario, showing him the golden turnips, and flying off in a hovercraft appeared to be the topic around every corner. Even the piranha plants who were normally content to stay in their pipes had emerged and were conversing with nearby troops about this strange set of circumstances. Only those most devoted to their duties kept their constant vigil. A Hammer Bro was patrolling around the parameter when a burst of light appeared along the wall. He jumped back and held a hammer high as the light drew a line which eventually protruded a small flat knob. He reached for the knob but was met with the door smacking him in the face. Mr. Game and Watch jumped out leaving the door wide open to see the stunned Hammer Bro.
Hammer Bro: “Woah there buddy, watch where you…HEY how’d you do that?”
GW: “No time to explain, not that you would understand anyway. I’m guessing by the general calm that Mario isn’t here?”
Hammer Bro: “Funny you mention that…he was here with a group of strange people. They all went to the dungeons and then flew off towards Yoshi’s Island. Very weird.”
GW: “REALLY? That’s great! I’m glad I found you. Thank you so very much. Sorry about hitting you.”
Before the hammer bro could say anything Mr. Game and Watch jumped back into the open door and slammed it shut.

As Geno floated mere inches above the ground, he made eye contact with each and every one of his opponents. He was determined to murder each of them. The atmosphere was still as a small breeze blew by. It was the last calm before the storm. Each individual was not moving a muscle, waiting for the battle ahead. Suddenly, Geno burst into the crowd of heroes. They quickly jumped out of the way, but Geno grabbed ahold of Luigi and King Dedede. At lightning speed, he lifted both above his head and slammed the two together. He then tossed them both down at the ground with such force that it created a small crater. Rising into the air he sent several blasts of energy after them. Dust clouded the area immediately. It was so dense that the heroes could barely see the person beside them. Kirby and Metaknight took to the sky. Geno floated nearby waiting for someone to emerge from the cloud. As they made their way towards him, he began blasting energy at the flying heroes. Kirby condensed into a rock to endure the attack. Metaknight, however, used his dimensional cape to teleport directly behind Geno. He swung his sword at the puppet, but struck only the air, as Geno had slid to the side. Geno spun around and kicked Metaknight which sent him spiraling out of control towards the ground.
The dust was beginning to clear along the ground near the crater. Slippy began shooting his laser up at Geno who was avoiding each shot. Luigi and Dedede had just regained consciousness again. As Luigi raised his head out of the crater, it was immediately met by Kirby in rock form falling on him. Luigi slumped over unconscious once more. Kirby regained his form and looked over at the newly out of commission Luigi with an expression of both astonishment and apology before rejoining Mario. Dedede snickered as he climbed out of the crater and joined the group. Metaknight regained control as he slid along the grass. Slippy was still unleashing barrages of laser fire as Geno swooped down for a second run against the heroes. This time, they decided to try an offensive approach. As Geno rushed towards them, Peach tossed a turnip directly at his head. Waluigi followed soon with a bobomb. Both made contact with the puppet but had no effect, he was still coming strong. Mario began shooting fireballs beside Slippy. Yoshi joined in by tossing a few Eggs which exploded near him. This too didn’t faze Geno. He rushed into the center of the heroes, stopped dead in his tracks, and released an energy wave all around him. The heroes were sent flying into the air. Dedede and Bowser quickly regained their footing as well as Metaknight. They began to charge Geno. Bowser began to breathe fire at the puppet as he moved in closer. This set Geno on the defensive. He jumped backwards only to be met by Metaknight’s Drill Rush. Although the attack did very little damage, it did push Geno to the side and right into the striking zone for Dedede’s charged jet hammer. Metaknight used his cape once more to teleport away as Dedede slammed his hammer into Geno. This was the first attack that proved useful, as Geno showed signs of pain and was sent flying into a nearby tree.
Luigi once again stirred. Wondering what exactly had happened, he peered nervously out of the crater. He could not see any sign of Geno immediately by and figured it would be safe for him to emerge and join the fight. As he stood up on the grass, he dusted off his overalls, but as he looked down, he was quickly met by the flying body of Yoshi. The impact sent both directly into the crater. Luigi swore loudly into the air as he pushed Yoshi off him and jumped out of the hole, determined not to get stuck in it again. One by one each of the fighters grouped together once more, peering into the forest where Geno was sent flying. Just as they began to wonder what could be in store, a large surge of energy uprooted trees and sent them flying into the air. Although they could not see him, they knew that Geno was now beginning to get angry. Geno sped towards the group as fast as he could. Slippy attempted once more to shoot him, but the energy surrounding him blocked all attacks. Abandoning the attempt, he holstered his gun and pulled out the reflector. Geno held out his fist and slammed right into King Dedede sending him flying into a nearby hillside. He then sped around the group in clockwise formation. He managed to grab hold of Peach, Yoshi, Metaknight, and Wario. Tossing all four into the air he shot upwards and began delivering consecutive punches and kicks to all of them. His speed was so intense that the four could not even be blasted into the surrounding areas because he would be delivering another blow directly behind them. Mario was desperate for this torture to stop. He could not stand to see his love, and his companion being pummeled like a hackey sack.
Waluigi reacted quickly by lighting more bobombs and tossing them upwards at Geno. Although the blasts did not harm him, it did catch his attention. Abandoning his fight with the four, he allowed their bodies to fly in whatever direction they pleased as he directed his attention towards Kirby, Luigi, Mario, Slippy, Walugi, and Bowser. Geno conjured up a large ball of energy and shot it towards the group. This was exactly the moment Slippy had been waiting for. He ran out in front to meet the attack and turned on his deflector. As the attack hit Slippy’s deflector it pushed him back slightly. Holding strong he pushed back against the dark ball and shot it back at Geno. Slippy’s reflection of this came as a surprise to the puppet who received the full blow of his own attack. Purely outraged at this point he swept down to the ground and pointed both fists at the group before him. Suddenly his hands and part of his arms detached from his body and went streaming for the small group. The flying fists began to weave in and out, each hero barely missing their attacks. Bowser was the unfortunate recipient of both fists. As they hit him in the stomach he was sent flying into yet another nearby tree. As both fists reattached to their master, Geno send another barrage of energy at the remaining heroes. Kirby, Slippy, and Waluigi were sent blasting into the bushes nearby. Luigi however shot right back to that same crater he knew so very well. The only one left standing before Geno now, was Mario. They began to circle around each other, eyes locked. Simultaneously they ran at each other, energy, fireballs and fist flying. Mario used all he had in an attempt to fend off Geno, but he was too powerful. Geno grabbed Mario by the feet and began to swing him around. Faster and faster he spun until he let go of Mario sending him flying into the nearby forest.
Deep within the forest of Yoshi’s Island, a beam of light began to appear on a tree trunk. The same door that had been appearing all over the area appeared once more. Mr. Game and Watch flung open the door and jumped out of it looking around for anyone who could tell him where Mario was. His answer was closer than he thought. Mr. Game and Watch turned his head as he heard screaming in the sky and before he knew what happened, Mario landed directly on Mr. Game and Watch.
Mario: “Mama Mia!”
GW: “Well that makes things easier.”
Mario: “Game and Watch? How did….why are… I don’t have time to talk.”
GW: “No you must listen to me. Utopia is in danger and I didn’t know who to turn to.”
Mario: “Utopia? OH you mean that experiment? Well I don’t have time for science right now. The world has gone crazy. Geno has gained power from some Destroyer guy and is trying to kill us. He’s gotten really powerful and has this black energy around him. He’s gone pure evil”
GW: “Ok maybe he did too….”
Mario: “HUH?”
Before Mr. Game and Watch could explain further, the trees directly in front of him were beginning to split. A definite path could be seen that would only have been made by Geno flying in to finish Mario Off. Mario and Mr. Game and Watch looked as the path got closer and closer. As Geno came into sight, he spotted Mario and continued directly towards him. He had his hand held out and gathering black energy. Mario braced himself for the impact, but something happened he hadn’t anticipated. Mr. Game and Watch suddenly jumped in front of Mario and swung his judgment hammer. Due to both his quick moving and Geno’s ignorance of his presence, Mr. Game and Watch’s hammer made contact with Geno’s head. Suddenly an ear piercing screech was let out as the number nine appeared above Mr. Game and Watch’s head and Geno was sent speeding back in the direction that he came from.
Mario: “WOAH!”
GW: “HEH, that was lucky…I hardly ever get that number.”
Mario: “Wait, you did that not knowing you were going to get that high of an attack?”
GW: “Well yeah, cause your survival is much more important than my own, if nothing else than for the sake of Utopia. We have tried, but we have failed completely.”
Mario: “Well, can you do me a favor. I’m sure Geno will not be happy about what just happened and will definitely try to destroy the whole planet now like they did to Pop Star. I need you to use your magic door to go to the center of this island, Peach’s Castle and Bowser’s Castle. Round up all the Yoshi, the toads, and all of Bowser’s Minions. Keep them within your world so they can be safe incase this world is destroyed. After this battle, we will discuss Utopia”
GW: “Sure thing. It shouldn’t take long at all.”
Mr. Game and Watch hoped back into the doorway and slammed it shut in his mission to help the toads, koopas and all other manner of creatures. Mario began to run back towards the original fighting site. He had wasted enough time talking to Game and Watch. As he followed the path Geno had so conveniently made for him, he found all his friends back on their feet looking wearily at a large crater in the ground. As he rejoined them, Geno’s hand grasped hold of the edge of the crater. He lifted himself back up to level ground. He was shaken by that sudden surprise but was now angrier than ever. He screamed into the air and began to pulse more energy through his body. Geno then released a large beam of energy that the heroes barely missed. As he began to rush at them once more, a beam of light shone down upon him. Somehow this beam of light had him trapped where he was. He tried to shoot energy beams out, but the only diffused right before him. The heroes looked just as stunned as Geno.
Geno: “What is the meaning of this?”
Voice: “Dear Friend, we have come to liberate you.”
Geno: “You again….be gone from me.”
Voice: “We gave fair warning to the darkness, and it simply made itself more prominent. This time we shall take action.”
Suddenly spiraling beams of light shone down upon Geno. As each entered his body, the black aura around him seemed to diminish quickly. The spirits of Star Road were attempted to purge the darkness from Geno’s body, but the process was slow and painful. Mario and the others watched for several minutes as Geno cried out in pain from the light. Finally, Geno’s eyes ceased to be red and he fell to the ground. The light barrier lifted as the voice spoke once more.
Voice: “We have done all we can. May your spirit have the strength left to fight off the darkness.”
Slippy: “OK? So let me get this straight. Some weird voice says they have come to purge him of this evil then basically admit they didn’t do much of anything to begin with?”
DDD: “Well, remember what I said. His darkness has some of the same properties as the darkness that has possessed me. It never really leaves. It’s all a matter of whether or not you can suppress it.”
The heroes made their way over to Geno. Peach crouched down and tapped him on the shoulder. He reacted suddenly with a gasp of air and looking around at those around him.
Geno: “Mario! I…I have to tell you.”
Mario: “What have you done?”
Geno: “Well, I was in the forest minding my own business when this golden colored turnip smacks me in the face. The juice gave me power, but I was pretty mad at whoever did this, so I went to go find out. When I get to the end I see a bunch of Bowser’s troops harassing a toad so I tried to save him. After doing so this guy in a cape shows up and says he wants me to help him destroy the worlds and that he would keep this one safe because of my services. So I joined in hopes of being able to warn you about all of this, but then something happened. He infused me with this dark power. It drove me mad. I can still feel it inside me like grime inside of a pot. My heart and mind could see all the terrible things I was doing, but the darkness had taken over. Now on top of that, my new master has transformed into a giant dragon beast and is very angry. I just had to tell you how sorry I am, and perhaps you could find a way to correct this.”
Peach: “It’s ok, don’t worry, you just need to fight off that darkness.”
Geno: “I can’t. It’s….too….powerful.”
Geno’s spirit was already losing the battle. He winced in pain as the darkness began to surge through his body once more.
Geno: “PLEASE, Kill me before I do anything more. PLEASE!”
He barely had time to inhale as a large barrier surrounded him. He screamed in severe pain as he rose into the sky. His dark aura was returning, his eyes once again were blood red. The heroes began to attack the barrier around him but with no use. They could do nothing but see their friend being taken over once more. With one last scream, the barrier broke, and Geno once again floated before them purely evil. With the memory of the light fresh in his demonic mind, he conjured an enormous ball of energy and tossed it into a nearby island completely destroying it. Geno looked down at the group and began to laugh maniacally.
Geno: “Pitiful. Do you think a weak light power could stop me? I will now destroy your entire planet. I know you have that ship, but just try to reach space before I blow this whole thing up. No ship that size can get speeds that great!”
And with that, Geno blasted off into the atmosphere.
Slippy: “To the Great Fox!”
Luigi: “We’ll never make it in time. We’re doomed!”
Bowser: “Have you already forgotten? We poured some of the golden turnip potion into the fuel chamber. This baby will get us out of here in no time thanks to that.”
One by one they piled into the Great Fox. Slippy ran on ahead to inform Peppy, while Metaknight raised the boarding platform. Everyone followed Kirby and Metaknight to the where Peppy and Slippy were piloting the ship. Peppy angled the ship to begin ascent, but was caught by surprise when the Golden turnip potion began to flow through. The second it did, the ship blasted off towards space at speeds greater than it had ever experienced. Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, and Yoshi took one last look at their beloved Mushroom Kingdom as they sped off towards the stars.
True to his word, Geno was already high in space above the Mushroom Kingdom gathering energy into a ball. He was going to destroy those pitiful fools. Perhaps if he were to destroy his former planet, the memories would cease and he could go on with his destruction. After he had gathered a ball three hundred times the size of him, he released it down at the Mushroom Kingdom. The planet exploded upon impact. Very pleased with himself, Geno began to laugh as chunks of earth were flying by. However, his happiness quickly turned into confusion and outrage as he witnessed the same large ship he had seen on the ground below weaving through the rubble towards him. The Great Fox had made it out just in time. It was Peppy’s time to give Geno a taste of battle as he began firing the ship’s lasers at him. These lasers were very large and powerful but easier to avoid. Shot after shot was sent Geno’s way who was avoiding all of them.
Peppy: “Dagnabbit, he’s too fast for these lasers, even with this turnip juice”
Peach: “What are we going to do if he decides to get on the ship?”
Slippy: “Well we’re just going to have to hope he doesn……hey why is the hanger door open?”
Peppy: “I never opened it, someone else in here must have.”
They looked around at each other but one person from their party was missing. King Dedede was not amongst them. Metaknight quickly flew out of the door and down towards the hanger followed closely by everyone else. When they arrived at the hanger, the door was indeed wide open. The small group of waddle doos was standing at the edge looking out of it. A short distance away was a strangely moving arwing.
Kirby: “Oh no!”
On board the Arwing, King Dedede was fumbling around with the controls. He did not know how this stupid thing worked but he knew what needed to be done. The arwing was weaving in and out while randomly speeding forward. The line across Dedede’s stomach was showing once again. Being around Geno for such a length of time had once again called out to the Dark Matter. He thought to himself that Geno asked to die in order to rid him of his demons. He too had done several things, and perhaps this could rectify those horrible things he did whilst under the control of the Dark Matter. Suddenly the arwing’s intercom began to buzz. Dedede looked around and saw a flashing light and pressed it. A familiar voice was heard.
Metaknight: “Just what exactly do you think you are doing? Get that thing back in here before you kill yourself How exactly did you figure out those controls?”
DDD: “No can do. I know what needs to be done. Watch out for the Waddle Doos for me.”
With those words he winced as the Dark Matter was trying to take over him once more. Grasping hold of the controls he began to get the hang of this thing. He circled wide until he had both the Great Fox and Geno in his vision. Geno was still dodging large energy beams. King Dedede took a large breath before hitting the boosters. As he began to speed towards Geno he discovered the weapons system and began firing lasers of his own. Geno was hit by a couple before producing another barrier to protect him. Dedede still speeding towards him pressed the left button which sent a missile streaming towards Geno. Geno’s barrier took the full force of this. He barely had time to react when the Arwing made contact with Geno’s Body. Shrapnel was sent flying as the aircraft exploded upon impact. The occupants of the Great Fox were staring in disbelief, but as the debris settled, the saw Geno completely unharmed with Dedede struggling from the choke hold of the puppet.
Geno: “May you be the first example of what happens with you mess with us.”
Geno kicked Dedede hard in the stomach, jumped backwards and pointes his finger at him. Suddenly a large purst of energy shot from his finger like a bullet. It passed completely through Dedede. Metaknight screamed into the air as they watched this happen. Blood issued from both Dedede’s mouth and stomach as his eyes went grey and he loosened the grip on his mallet. The King of Pop Star floated in space dead, free of his demons. Geno grasped ahold of Dedede’s hammer and turned around to address the Great Fox.
Geno: “This is a warning to you all. Destruction and death await you if you continue to resist. You shall end up like this penguin. I can sence my master’s presence nearby, and I leave to join him. Take this time to re-assess your situation.”
Geno looked at his new trophy weapon and smiled before blasting off towards the north.
Peach: “He said his master was nearby? Where could he be?”
Peppy: “Well the closest planets to this were Pop Star and Hyrule. Judging by his flight path I’m guessing he’s going there.”
Mario: “Well then we must go there and help Link and the others.”
Metaknight:”So we shall, but I must first do something.”

In the midst of the floating rubble that was once the mushroom kingdom, a beam of light appeard as Mr. Game and Watch’s Door materialized in space. He flung open the door and began to jump out but was shocked at the scene. Mere seconds before he had been at Bowser’s Castle but now the whole world had been destroyed. He lowered his head in sadness. At least he had been able to save many Yoshi, Toad, and minions of Bowser. But whether Mario had survived he did not know.
