Before you start, it should probably be noted that this story is base on a COMPLETE REDESIGN OF THE MARIO SERIES FROM THE GROUND UP.

“They say the downfall of this civilization will be that the people are going to just stop caring, then they’ll all just up and die. I don’t think so. This country is going to end with a gun in it’s mouth, and some drugged-up ass hole is gonna pull the trigger.”
-A statement made by Mario to an assembly during a speech.
CHAPTER 1: THE DAY THEY CAME BEFORE US.
“You really believe that, don’t you?” The bulky knight stood, towering over the young man before him. His image was once terrifying to those under him, the very thought of him being around striking fear into the hearts of those who disobeyed the King. Now he was so low that he’d earned a new nickname.
“Look, Toad.” The young man swiveled in place, facing the huge knight with a surprising courage considering he was so much shorter than the man before him. “I don’t care. You don’t understand because you’re too close. You serve the royal family without question.” Mario was his name. At the age of fifteen, he’d graduated from a highly respected college in the Castle town of the Mushroom Kingdom, with his brother trailing by mere months. Mere months later, the two became openly aggressive members of a growing political party that sought to overthrow the King and place a new ruler (which would probably be Mario himself) in his place. The ‘Mario brothers’ were a dangerous sort of person to deal with, which was why Toad was here, to convince him he was wrong or take him out. One of the two events would occur, and either way the Royal family was going to be the victor this day.
“I think you’re looking at it the wrong way.” Toad, standing at attention, allowed his eyes to follow the young man as he paced around the small room. Mario stood in front of a desk, his brother standing at attention beside it. He couldn’t see them, but Toad knew that there were two guards by the door, one leaning against a bookcase that held multitudes of books that lacked any relevance to what the men were trying to accomplish. The other stood against the wall, probably ready to draw the sword he had at his side. “I don’t think the king is at fault here.”
That one caught Mario’s attention. He stopped pacing and made eye contact with Toad for the first time since he had arrived. “And whose fault is it? Mine? Yours?” Luigi, the younger brother, seemed to have caught something funny in that sentence that Toad had missed, as a smile appeared across his face, then vanished suddenly.
“Maybe it’s the people.” Toad allowed himself to look down at Mario. “Maybe it’s those who caused such a ruckus that destabilized us this way.” Toad’s gaze was locked on Mario for a long moment, then the two looked away from each other in a simultaneous fashion.
With a defeated sigh, Mario sat on the desk. “What do you want from us?”
Toad stiffened a little, satisfied that he was getting through to the young man. Without showing his satisfaction, he recited the list of demands from the king to Mario. “First, stop whatever plans you may have along the lines of an uprising or revolution.”
Mario scoffed and shook his head. “If these people want to riot, they’ll do it with or without me.”
Unfazed by the comment, Toad continued. “Second, you are to disband this radical party. Our system of government isn’t ready to handle things of this nature, and we’ve all agreed it would be best if-”
This time, the typically-silent man sheathed in green spoke in Mario’s turn. “This government can’t handle it because the king can’t stand the thought of someone taking just a little of his power away.” Luigi said in a low voice. “He doesn’t like the idea of falling from grace.
Toad’s face remained as cold and emotionless as before. “Finally, the two of you will come to the castle with me and issue a formal apology to the royal family for their grievances.”
The room fell silent for a long, tense while. All eyes were welded to Toad, his blue armor seeming to stand out more and more as those around him glared.
After some time had passed, Mario stood from the desk, his hands in hi pockets. “Fine. You want me to apologize, that’s fine.”
Relief strode across Toad’s face, the first piece of genuine emotion that he’d exhibited so far. The same could not be said of the rest of the room, which now shot him hurt looks filled with anger and betrayal.
“Oh, sure. I’ll surrender.” Mario repeated as he strode to a window. Dramatically, he tore down the curtains to the huge, wall-consuming window. Doing so revealed the cityscape, and in the distance, the Castle the royal family called home. “I’ll surrender when I see that castle burn to the ground!”
