(Chapter 17: Sonic’s Last Stand)
“Haha! Today is a great day, Black!” Sonic chanted to Black Shadow. “Not only did we blow up a hotel, but we also got a bunch of cash!”
Black Shadow groaned. “This isn’t about cash. This isn’t even about you. This is about what Zero wants, and what he wants alone.”
“Heheh, yeah well, he can’t get it if he doesn’t have the Griseous Orb.”
“That reminds me, do you still have it?”
“Yeah, here, go nuts,” Sonic replied, handing Black Shadow the Orb. “I don’t know why I stole it in the first place.”
****
Silver limped out of the hotel, being supported by Shadow, and the two joined the evacuees outside the now-destroyed hotel.
“What was that all about?” Link questioned.
“It was Sonic’s doing,” replied Silver. “He set up us the bomb, and, as you can see, escaped.”
Mario shook his head and sat down on a nearby ledge. “This has gone on long enough,” he said. “Red, can you go after him? Your Charizard should be fast enough.”
“Sure thing,” Red replied, and let Charizard free of its Poke Ball. The mighty dragon roared, spitting out some fire as it did so. “Alright, Charizard. After that black helicopter!”
Red climbed onto Charizard’s back, and the two took off after Sonic and Black Shadow.
“But why would Sonic want to attack a...oh, never mind, the answer is pretty obvious,” Link said.
“So what do we do now?” Ike asked.
“What do you mean, ‘what do we do now’? There’s nothing we can do except go to the next town, or city, or whichever,” Luigi replied.
“No...” Mario whispered. “No. This is as far as we go. Zero has gone too far this time. This means war. If Zero wants to play dirty, fine. Let him. But now...now we strike back. Now we make our stand.”
“Mario, you can’t be serious. I mean, now? Of all times?” Ness worried.
“Yes, Ness. Think about it: How far have we come? How much have we lost? How many times HAVE we lost? Sure, we beat Giga Bowser. Sure, we beat his polygons the first time. But look at how many of us are gone: Zelda, Fox, Marth, we even lost Falco. We can’t try and escape from him anymore. We will fight. And we will win.”
****
Red and his Charizard soared through the skies, chasing after Sonic and Black Shadow’s helicopter. It was a nice feeling; one the trainer and his companion hadn’t felt in a while.
“Ah, so, you want to play tag, huh?” Sonic cawed. “Fine. I’ll be it.”
Sonic grabbed his gun and aimed it out the passenger’s window, and began firing at Charizard. The bullet’s missed every time, except one, which whizzed right by Red’s shoulder.
“Heheh,” Red chuckled. “You’ll need to do better than that, traitor,” he taunted.
“Grr,” Sonic growled, and grabbed his bag of cash. “Screw it, I’m out of here,” and jumped out of the helicopter and into the streets of Station Square. He looked up and fired a few more shots at Charizard, only to miss. The duo changed their course and headed right for him. Charizard landed on the ground and Red hopped off to confront Sonic.
“Give in, Sonic, there’s nowhere to turn.”
“Ha! Are you kidding? I have an entire CITY at my disposal!”
Sonic fired at an incoming car, hitting the hood. It swerved out of control and headed towards Red and Charizard. The two managed to dodge, but Charizard took a brutal injury on his left leg.
“Charizard!”
“Hahahahahaha!” Sonic laughed, and ran towards the subway, holding his money and gun. Red pulled out his red Poke Ball and a red beam consumed his dragon. Red chased after Sonic and caught up to him fairly quickly. Sonic entered the front car and locked the door. Red ran into the last car, and all the doors on the train soon locked. The train started moving and left the station.
<There’s no way I can get to him without being noticed...I imagine his ears would hear me if I were a good few feet away...>
He looked behind him, and sure enough, there was a door behind him.
“C’mon, Ivysaur,” Red said, and let Ivysaur out of her Poke Ball. “Ivysaur, use Vine Whip and open the door.”
“Saur!”
Two vines extended from the plant on her back and, after a bit of a struggle, managed to pry the doors open.
“Thanks!” Red said, and Ivysaur returned to her Poke Ball. “This may seem drastic...but if I can crash through the front window of the train...I should be able to take him out.”
Red climbed the ladder on the back of the last car, and onto the roof. However, he couldn’t walk, and instead had to crawl. He wormed his way across the conjoined cars, and everything went well until he was almost hit by a subway light and had to roll out of the way.
“Jeez!”
Thud.
Sonic’s ears perked and a smile crept across his face. “Hey Red, is that you!?” Hey yelled, only to not receive an answer. “Wouldn’t be able to interest you in a bribe, would I? I’ve got plenty to go around!”
He reached into the bag and pulled out a few bills, only to realize that he had been conned: The money was fake; it couldn’t even be used and had no value. This isn’t cheap counterfeit money, either. This was toy money. Sonic’s eye widened in disbelief and felt himself become consumed with anger and disgust. He grabbed his gun and went ballistic, firing at the roof like a madman.
“YOU BASTARD! HOW DOES THAT FEEL?! YOU LIKE IT!? DO YOU LIKE IT, YOU BASTARD?!”
Red, despite not being on the same car as Sonic, rolled out of the way just in case a stray bullet went for him. He stopped after three rolls, realizing that no bullets would hit him.
“YOU F...” and stopped himself when his gun ran out of ammo. He then bolted down the train cars, screaming “AAAAH! I’M COMING FOR YOU, RED!!!”
The brief gun ordeal over, Red continued to crawl across the cars of the train. He then heard a low thumping sound and looked behind him and saw Sonic, but before he could react, the blue hedgehog backhanded him across the right side of his face.
“Guh!”
Red attempted to move back, but Sonic backhanded him again. Soon after, the hedgehog grabbed the boy’s arms and held him down on top of the car. The two briefly wrestled each other, grunting and growling at each other in vain. Sonic sat on top of Red and punched him in the face, and Red retaliated by doing the same and knocked Sonic onto his back beside him.
As Red went to attack Sonic again, blue boy backhanded Red a third time, knocking the trainer onto his back. Sonic grabbed the back of Red’s head, lifted it up, and slammed it back down on the car.
“Yeah! Yahoo!”
Sonic once again sat on top of Red, holding him down by the neck.
“What’re you gonna do Red, huh? What’re you gonna do? You piece of sh*t.”
Red looked behind him, and noticed an incoming subway light.
“I’m the guy with a plan, because I’m smarter than you. Yeah, I’m smarter than you.”
As they got closer to the subway light, Red used what strength he had to lift Sonic’s head up and keep it there. Sonic looked and saw the incoming red circular light, and he was helpless to do anything about it.
“Aaah!”
WHAP! Sonic’s head crashed into the light, decapitating him. His lifeless body fell off of the train.
“Oh yeah? Well I’m taller,” was Red’s response to Sonic’s last words.

Black Shadow returned to Zero’s fortress with the Griseous Orb in hand. He had its strap clenched in his fist, and had a devilish grin on his face. He found the grey hedgehog in the Polygon’s chamber, simply staring at them.
“Sir? I believe you wanted this.”
Zero slowly turned his head and looked at Black Shadow’s fist, the same one holding the Orb. He slowly took the orb away from the pilot and held the Orb in his palm.
“Excellent...” he said, felling over it with a couple of his fingers. “And...what of The Smashers?”
“Last I saw them, they were in Corneria City,” Black Shadow replied.
“Hmhmhm, very good. Prepare for the invasion, and ready the troops. The final stages of the takeover of Planet Nintendo are drawing neigh.”
“Yes, sir,” Black Shadow replied, and left the room.
<Prepare yourself, Mario...You won’t have a planet to defend for much longer...The battle between good and evil will finally come to a close, as you and I finally face off for the first and last time.>
“Haha! Today is a great day, Black!” Sonic chanted to Black Shadow. “Not only did we blow up a hotel, but we also got a bunch of cash!”
