(Chapter 12: The Halberd)
---------------------------------------------
Part I: A Dark Revelation
---------------------------------------------
A funeral was held for the fallen swordsman Marth that night. Wood was gathered and a fire was lit. Due to the Swordwielder’s Code (Which I won’t get into), any fallen swordsman was to be cremated, their ashes blown into the air. Needless to say, Meta Knight, Link, and Ike followed the code and did just that.
“We’re losing members by the day,” Mario said. “Zelda, Fox, and now Marth.”
“Don’t forget Falco,” Link added.
The fire cackled in the cold air of the night, as Meta Knight, Ike, and Link saluted their fallen comrade.
“Well, now what do we do?” Gold questioned. “We have nowhere to go and Marth is dead.”
“I know where YOU’RE all going,” Meta Knight said. “To HELL!!”
With a single powerful slash of his sword, Meta Knight managed to send out a visible airwave which failed to hit anyone, but he seemed rather content with it.
“Meta Knight?! What’s wrong with you!?” Sonic spat.
“The Meta Knight you’ve known up until now was nothing but a mere illusion! I have waited for the right moment, and now, I can finally reveal who I truly am! I am none other than Dark Meta Knight, servant of Zero, and inhabitant from the Mirror World!”
“Dark Meta Knight?” Mario said in shock. “But Kirby destroyed you! Literally!”
“All smoke and mirrors, I’m afraid. Mario, you remember how Fox suddenly crashed through Zero’s tower? The crash was caused by me. I slashed the underside of his Arwing, sending him spiraling out of control.”
“I don’t suppose you’d have anything to do with Falco’s betrayal?” Ike asked sternly.
“Oh, but I do. I threatened to take his life if he didn’t do what I say. I’m a man of my word. Not wanting to die, he obeyed my order to kill Fox. Thus, you wouldn’t be able to escape from here. Our plan proved successful, and now you are going to die in this barren desert.”
“So why did you wait to tell us about who you really are now?” Link asked.
“No real reason, but all your senseless yammering from before was giving me a headache and I finally snapped. I tried to hang on for as long as I could...but you finally pulled me out. And now, my dear friends, it’s time to say farewell you your fearless leader!”
The evil clone’s sword began to glow and soon went up in flames. He brought his arm back and swung his arm forward, with a large fire boomerang being sent towards Mario. In a daring move, Sonic took the blow for his leader, with the boomerang hitting the left side of his body and setting it on fire.
“Squirtle! Hydro Pump!” Red ordered, and Squirtle shot a powerful blast of water from its mouth, dousing Sonic as he rolled around frantically on the desert sand. The fire was soon extinguished, and Sonic lay on the ground.
“You son of a b*tch!” Ike snapped. “I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you right here!”
“You, kill me? Ha! Unlikely. And as much as I’d like to try and kill Mario again, watching Sonic roll and scream in pain was enough for me. I shall be on my way now. Farewell!”
He grabbed the end of his cape and threw it over himself, vanishing in the darkness of the night.

Part II: Battle Onboard the Halberd!
--------------------------------------------
“We need to get him to a hospital! Stat!” Ike exclaimed.
“There isn’t a hospital around here for miles!” Mario retorted.
“I’ll take him to Onett,” Red explained. “The hospital there will work for now.”
Out of its Poke Ball appeared Charizard, and Red, carrying Sonic, hopped on its back.
“To Onett!” Red declared, and they took off.
A low growl could be heard, but it wasn’t coming from the ground; it was coming from the sky. Above them was a massive battleship with bat-wings.
“The Bat-copter?” Link asked, and Mario facepalmed. From below the ship lowered an elevator, with the real Meta Knight standing on it.
“Hello there,” Meta Knight said.
“Hey Meta Knight,” Gold said.
“I saw that imposter attack you guys and Sonic. Are you all okay?”
“We’re all fine,” Ike said. “Sonic had to be taken to the hospital.”
“I saw what happened...but a skin graft should clear that up... though I wouldn’t count on it.”
“So what brings you out here?” Mario asked.
“Funny you should ask. Sword Knight attempted a hostile takeover of my battleship, with a load of polygons with him. I can’t fight them off on my own, and I’d appreciate some help.”
“Sure!” Pikachu replied. Mario nodded.
“Come with me,” Meta Knight whispered and lead them to the elevator which headed up into the interior of the ship.
“Sir Meta Knight!” A soldier came rushing out, wearing a Viking helmet and an axe. “We’ve got trouble! Sword has deployed the...the...Heavy Lobster!”
“That fiend!” Meta Knight exclaimed. “He’ll never get away with this! You guys go your own way. I suggest splitting up. We can take on the polygons if we separate into groups. Now go!”
Meta Knight dashed off, and the Smashers broke up into groups and took whatever path they could find.
Clang! Clang! The footsteps of the Heavy Lobster roared down the halls. Mario, Link, Falcon, and Samus jumped down a chute which took them to a one-way hall leading to an elevator, which went up to a higher level. There they found a door, which was blocked off by several polygons: Pikachu, Ike, and Samus.
Meanwhile, Ike, Pikachu, Gold, and Luigi all headed down a long corridor and found a door, which was also blocked off by a group of polygons: Mario, Lucario, and Sonic.

At the hospital, Sonic lay quietly in his room, the burned side of his face on the pillow. Falco coolly walked in and raised the bed up, disturbing Sonic from his slumber.
“Ooh...ugh...hi...” Falco grunted.
Sonic started fidgeting in his bed, as Falco took a seat on a stool.
“I don’t want there to be any hard feelings between us, Sonic. Although I did know Meta Knight was a fraud from the beginning...”
“Gah! Shut up!” Sonic snapped. “If you knew, why didn’t you say something?!”
“Why would I do that when I was working for Zero since this venture started? And now it looks like your friends have betrayed you as well.”
“Betrayed...what?”
Falco grinned. “If they really were your friends...don’t you think they’d be here right now with you? Red took off to help them just seconds you were admitted.”
Suddenly, the latter’s footsteps could he heard coming down the hall, and Falco vanished in a puff of smoke. Red entered the room.
“Hey Sonic,” the trainer said quietly.
“Why...why did you leave after I was admitted...? Why didn’t you stay and make SURE I was going to be okay?”
“Sonic...with the situation going on right now...there really isn’t any time for that.”
Sonic scoffed. “You’re right... when one of your fellow comrades is in the hospital, the right thing to do is just to abandon them. Makes perfect sense. And when I was hit by Dark Meta Knight’s attack, your Squirtle didn’t do anything until it was too late.”
Red swallowed hard, and then turned to the hedgehog. “I’m sorry, Sonic.”
Sonic turned and faced the trainer, the left side of his face discolored and hideously deformed. Instead of blue, it was grey. The left half of his mouth was gone, yet the muzzle was still in tact. Where his lip should have been, there wasn’t one. There were merely teeth. His left eye was shaped more like Shadow’s eye now.
“No,” he whispered. “No you’re not. Not yet.”
****
The battle onboard the Halberd waged on, and the Smashers struggled to survive against the beefed-up polygons. Meta Knight himself took on the Heavy Lobster, which was now in a hallway. Meta Knight warped into view via Dimensional Cape.
“This ends here!” the warrior seethed. The machine opened up its pincers and shot an orange beam straight for the warrior, who dodged the attack in a speedy sidestep. The lobster continued to fire, and Meta Knight kept dodging.
“This is getting quite boring,” the blue puffball said.
The machine locked its vision on Meta Knight, and fired missiles from its pincers instead of lasers. The warrior managed to destroy many of them, but the last one hit him head-on, sending him flying into a wall.
The lobster approached him and pointed its arms in Meta Knight’s face. The insides began to glow, and, at blinding speed, Meta Knight got up and slashed right through the lobster. The top half began to slide off, and fell to the ground, and the legs fell onto their side.
“That takes care of that,” Meta Knight said proudly. “Now, onto Sword Knight.”
The Smashers had survived the ordeal of numerous polygons and returned to the bridge, but Meta Knight wasn’t there.
“He must have gone to attack Sword,” Gold implied.
On the Halberd deck, Sword Knight stood at the edge, looking onward as the clouds were demolished from the battleship. The warrior smiled.
“And soon the world shall suffer the same fate as its most powerful being conquers it,” the warrior said.
“Wanna bet?”
Meta Knight stood on a higher level of the Halberd, and Sword Knight looked up. “So, you managed to seize control of my battleship, and release the Heavy Lobster. But this game of yours ends right here, right now.”
Knight chuckled. “Ah, Meta Knight. Still naïve as ever. So be it. This is where it ends for you.”
Sword nabbed his weapon from his belt, and Meta Knight charged him.
KASHING! SHANG! FWOO! The two fighters mercilessly attacked each other, caring only about gaining the upper hand. At one point, their swords locked together, and the two stared directly into the other’s eyes.
“Still think you can beat me?” Sword daunted.
“I know I can,” Meta Knight grunted, and pushed his foe away.
Meta Knight deployed his wings and took to the sky. His sword started glowing, and thrust his arm forward. From the blade came a golden boomerang, which the count dodged. The boomerang crashed into the front deck, leaving a crater. Meta Knight continuously fired the boomerangs, with none of them hitting Sword
“Fool!” the green knight spat. “You have done nothing but damage your precious battleship!”
Meta Knight grunted. What Sword said was true. The attacks were out of anger and nothing more. Meta Knight descended to the deck, and the two resumed their sword-clashing duel.
“I’d love to stay and fight, Meta Knight,” Sword Knight said. “But I have other matters to attend to. Ta-ta!”
He vanished in a puff of smoke, ending the duel.
(No duh).
Meta Knight returned to the inside of the ship, where The Smashers were waiting for him.
“Well, that was interesting,” Ike commented. “But... where are we going to go from here?”
“Corneria City is pretty close by. I suppose we can stop there,” Meta Knight replied.
“Woo!” Pikachu said. “Home of the Light Warriors!”
“That... that’s just super,” Gold said.
