Chapter 1
Lucario lifted his head, parting his jaws in a massive yawn. It took him a moment or two to realize where he was. Smash High. Memories flashed before his eyes as he remembered the previous day. However reluctant he had been to leave his family, he was excited about going to the best school for brawlers in training, and had been literally shaking with anticipation as he boarded the bus. The school had been everything he’d hoped for and more. With its tall, grand buildings and multitude of classrooms, it was the high school he’d always dreamt of attending. And now his dream—which had seemed so far-fetched and impractical previously—was coming true. He was a proud student of Smash High School! Lucario grinned as he pictured what events may lay in store for him. Smash High specialized in everything from mathematics and other such ordinary school subjects to battling classes and student-specific tutoring. While at the school, a selected few would go through an epic tournament that took place each year, and Lucario was hoping that he would be one of those lucky enough to participate. He had heard many tales about earlier tournaments, and was looking forward to meeting and battling veterans and newcomers alike. So far he’d only seen the school, as after his brief tour, he’d been sent to his new room to sleep. The aura pokemon threw back his covers and leapt out of bed, prepared for the day ahead of him.
As he walked down the hall, Lucario saw many strange people coming and going. He watched Pokemon Trainer with a loathing glare as the boy passed by. He’d never been overly fond of Pokemon Trainer, probably due to the fact that he had once tried to capture Lucario in the wild. He saw two little puff-balls, one wearing a metal mask that concealed his face. The other was pink and looked like he belonged in a child’s toy aisle. Another oddity he spotted was a short monkey padding along next to a gorilla. He made a lame attempt at greeting them, and they responded merely with disgusted looks.
After seeing lots of new faces, and attempting to remember names, Lucario rather unfortunately bumped into an old enemy of his, whom he had battled often in the wild. The little electric rat glared defiantly up at him, twitching the large, pointed ears that protruded from the top of his head.
“Pikachu.”
That single word contained all the hate Lucario felt for him, and he felt ready to leap into battle and lop the critter’s head off.
“Pika pikaaa!” snorted Pikachu.
“At least I’m not a little rat that shoots thunder,” growled Lucario.
“Pika, pika, chu, pikachu.”
“You’re in the tournament? How do you know? They haven’t announced it yet!” Lucario’s eye twitched with pent up anger. He took a deep breath and then exploded with fury. “I don’t see how a yellow rat that screams Pika at the top of his lungs managed to get in! That pink puff-ball would have a better chance than you!”
“And—“ he added, turning around as he stormed off, “—learn to speak English!”
Lucario examined his map of the school. It made no sense what-so-ever! He wasn’t even sure if a square indicated a classroom, or a giant pedestal. As for how to get for his classroom; he was utterly lost. This was why he was brimming with gratitude when a seemingly new brawler appeared at his side, brandished his hand and shook Lucario’s large paws with little difficulty. Lucario looked at him and gasped. Standing before him was an angel boy, equipped with stunning white wings and angel garments.
“Pit’s the name,” said the angel boy. Lucario was still stunned.
“I’m Lucario,” he managed to say once he’d gathered his wits. He pulled out the folded paper he’d slid into the back of his headband. It was a list of all his classes and classmates for first term. In the list of his first class in the morning was printed the name Pit.
“Seems we have class together,” Lucario mused. Pit was looking at his headband.
“Quite handy, that. Wonder how well mine would work,” he commented. He suddenly seemed to realize what Lucario had said.
“Oh, then that’s an easy fix! Now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure we’re in most of our classes together. An angel and a pokemon! Fancy that! Some good sitcom material, that is.” He continued on like this all the way to their first class. Turned out, the angel boy loved to talk. Upon entering the class, their teacher offered them a friendly smile and gave them the option to sit where they wished. Pit sat on Lucario’s right, while on the left was the pink fluff-ball Lucario had seen earlier. The pokemon noticed that Pikachu was also in his class.
“Is there no escape?” Lucario muttered to himself. He was about to say something about Pikachu to Pit when their teacher began to talk.
“Welcome to the first term of the year! Some of you went here the previous year, while others—“ she motioned to Lucario and Pit “—have joined us from other schools. It is the start of what will be a fantastic year, with many extra-curricular activities such as the tournament!” Whispers spread around the classroom as she mentioned the tournament. The teacher silenced them with a raised hand before continuing. “I am your mathematics and science teacher. We will learn alternatively about each subject, with one lesson on one, one lesson on the other, yes, we all know how it goes… I am Miss Applewell, for those of you who didn’t attend last year.” She wrote her name on the board. “Just in case you decide to make a shrine in my honor,” she joked. “Couldn’t have incorrect spelling on that, I mean…Uh, okay. Nobody’s laughing. Let’s get on with the lesson!” She clapped her hands. “Get out your math books, and we’ll get started. Next week we’ll be having a test to see what you already know about math, and what we need to work on. Right, you’ve all got those? Excellent!”
“I’m definitely going to have trouble next week!” exclaimed Pit. Lucario looked at him quizzically. “With the math,” explained the angel boy. “Seriously, those formulas are confusing!”
“I’m sorry, was that before or after I lost the will to live?” snorted Lucario. Pit chuckled.
“You’re such a downer, Lucario. Come on, let’s go meet some of our fellow students.”
They walked over to a table in the cafeteria and got seated. Opposite them sat the two puff-balls and an odd green and white dinosaur with large eyes, spikes down his back and extremely large boots.
“These two ‘puff-balls’ are Kirby and Meta Knight. Kirby’s the one who looks like fairy floss. Meta Knight prefers to look tough,” said Pit. “And this dinosaur thing is Yoshi. Guys, this is Lucario.”
Lucario smiled and then turned to face Pit. “If you’re new here as well, then how do you know everybody?”
“Because I—unlike you, it seems—actually have a social life and came to some of the parties that were on before the school term started.”
Lucario shot him a dirty look. “I hate you.” Pit withdrew in mock offence.
“Why, I’ve never done a bad deed to you in my life! Shame on you!” he cried. Then he burst into fits of laughter. “Oh, I get myself sometimes. I’m just so funny.”
A voice rang over the speakers, deafening the students seated close by. ‘All year eight students report to the assembly area,” droned the voice.
“That’s us!” announced Pit. He grabbed Lucario’s hand and they headed to the ‘assembly area’ with Kirby, Meta Knight and Yoshi close on their heels. They burst into the assembly room and sat in a group of their own.
“Now we apologize for not holding this meeting sooner, and hope that we did not cause too much inconvenience in the case of new students becoming lost, etcetera, etcetera,” said the same zombie-like voice that had came over the speaker. “I’m Mrs. Browning, your principal.” She was dull, and looked almost identical to Miss Applewell. They both had light brown, shoulder-length hair, a proud stature and glasses sitting atop pointed noses. Lucario snorted with laughter at the resemblance. Shooting him an irritated glance, Mrs. Browning continued.
“All students have received class lists, a map, and a key to their new room, which is shared with a room-mate of course. Yes, yes, I know. Some of you were without room-mates last night. I assure you, that a lot of you will be moved from your current rooms to another to make room for the newest arrivals.”
“Being the rich kids,” grumbled Kirby.
“And I expect you to make them welcome. That’s done, so we’ll discuss the tournament. I shall now announce all students participating.” Mrs. Browning paused to fumble with her papers, apparently searching for the list. “Ah, here we are. Now, here’s the full list. Diddy Kong, Ike, King Dedede, Lucario, Lucas, Meta Knight, Olimar, Pit, Pokemon Trainer, R.O.B., Snake, Sonic, Wario, Wolf, Bowser, Captain Falcon, Donkey Kong, Falco Lombardi, Fox McCloud, Ganondorf, the Ice Climbers, Jigglypuff, Kirby, Link, Luigi, Maril, Marth, Game & Watch, Ness, Pikachu, Peach, Zelda, Samus, Toon Link and Yoshi.” Pit and Lucario grinned at each other, both resisting the urge to dance in circles singing ‘We made it!’
Mrs. Browning cleared her throat. “I’m sure we’re all very happy. I expect the students participating in the tournament to meet here next week at this time to discuss further details.” The group of students filed out the door, the ones chosen for the brawl wearing gigantic grins on their faces.
