A concept that's a little overdone, I know. I just wanted to do it.
I'm open to criticism, by the way. Just try not to be too harsh.
It was a normal day on sunny Mobius. Sonic laid back against a tree and started to doze off. He had just started talking to Tails about how boring things were when his multi-tailed pal remembered he had to do and took off. The ocean was normal. Boring. The wind was normal. Boring. Everything was just too normal. His longtime rival, Dr. Ivo Robotnik or "Eggman" as he seemed to refer to himself now, hadn't been heard from quite some time. As a result, Sonic has had a great deal of time to just do nothing. It was all too boring. Sonic lifted his had to the sky and watched the clouds dift past it in a sort of ahalf asleep stupor. It was all just too boring for the hyperactive hedgehog.
"Wait," Sonic started, "what was that?"
Sonic focused on an area near his thumb, way up in the clouds. A speck seemed to hang high above. What could it be, Sonic wondered as he stared at it. Deciding he had nothing better to do, Sonic stood up with a stretch and decided to rush over to Tails' lab to find out more about the thing in the sky.
When Sonic arrived at Tails' lab, he saw his friend watering that plant he kept in his window while going over some wierd charts. Sonic felt kind of bad for the little guy. That plant was his only reminder of one of Tails' dearest friends, now lost forever light years away. Sonic shook his head as he ran over to the door, such negative thoughts just weren't cool. Upon entering, Sonic turned to see Tails setting down his watering can and putting his full focus on the charts. The freshly watered plant was sitting in its own little pot on the windowsill. A table covered in books and charts sat in the corner by the window, a single chair keeping it company. The rest of the room seemed more like one of Eggman's lairs than his friend's labratory anymore. Metal walls, strange devices, and even stranger displays were seen all over. There were even a few gutted badniks littering the floor. Tails seemed to want to know more about how they worked nowadays. Of course Sonic didn't care, he was destroying them left and right so why couldn't his buddy examine the remains.
"Hey Sonic," Tails started, without once turning from the charts, "if my calculations are correct, Angel Island should be passing over pretty soon. Do you think we should pay a visit to our pal Knuckles."
"About that Tails," Sonic answered, "you might want to check your doodads to see if everything's okay. I saw something in the sky a few seconds ago and it may have very well been his place hanging a little too far down."
"You saw it? You shouldn't have been able to see it. Thanks to the master emerald, Angel Island has enough power to float just outside of visual range. If we can see it that means something's severely wrong."
Tails walks over to an odd looking device and presses a few buttons. A monitor lit up. A far view of Mobius could clearly be seen. With the ticking of a few more buttons, the picture zoomed in. It zoomed in closer and closer until the island could be seen. It was indeed rather nearby. In fact, you could see the nearby coast from display. Tails clicked a few more buttons and the image was replaced by a bunch of figures and numbers that, after looking at them for too long, made Sonic's head hurt.
"Well this isn't good new," exclaimed Tails, "according to this, Angel Island is hanging far too low. It doesn't appear to be dropping any more at the moment, but its current altitude started about only an hour ago."
"Finally," Sonic said as he hit the button he knew opened the hatch for the Tornado, "something to do. Hop in the driver's seat lil' bro we've gotta get over there ASAP."
Tails sighed. For him, things had just gotten peaceful. This would undoubtedly disrupt his research. Oh well, he thought, at least Sonic is happy now.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Give it up!" Knuckles yelled as he threw another punch at his metallic doppelganger. Mecha Knuckles stepped aside and countered with a punch of his own into Knuckles' stomach.
Things had been going so well, Knuckles thought. Just this morning, even, he was thinking to himself about how nice it actually was. He thought about how safe the emerald was now that Eggman was quiet. Now this! One of Eggman's robots, Mecha Knuckles, attacked him out of nowhere. Not only that, but it broke a chunk off of the master emerald.
Another swing from Mecha Knuckles. Knuckles ducked below its blade tipped fist, and touched at the place where the machine had hit him last. A fair amount of blood spattered his glove. Knuckles was glad he was so close to the master emerald. He could actively use its power to heal himself should he get hit again. The mech jumped back and prepared for another assault. Knuckles wasn't about to let it win and it wasn't going to give up peacefully. Knuckles wondered momentarily why Mecha Knuckles hadn't been upgraded like Metal Sonic had been. Of course he was rather glad his evil duplicate hadn't changed any, otherwise the fight would have been a great deal more challenging. The mech's eyes flashed and it ran forward. Knuckles punched and the mech jumped. The mech dove toward his fleshy foe and Knuckles dug into the ground. The mech hovered momentarily, the boosters on its back keeping it off the ground, and watched as Knuckles burst from the ground a few yards away. The mech analyzed the situation. They were too evenly matched. It was programmed with every fighting style Knuckles knew, but that could only keep it at an even playing field. It would have to rely on its batteries holding out longer than the organic's stamina.
An hour passed and the two were still caught in dire combat. Each blow, thrown to kill, missing by only a hair's breadth. Knuckles was on his last leg. He couldn't use the master emerald like he thought he could. Apparently, it was relatively useless in its broken state. At least the island was still floating.
"Why wont you GIVE UP!" Knuckles roared as he threw a great flurry of punches toward his mechanized counterpart. Most of the punches missed, but one finally met the cold metal exterior of the mech. The blow was accompanied by a sickly ripping sound as bone met metal. The mech's torso chassis was ruined, but so was Knuckles' hand. Just perfect, Knuckles thought.
A whirring sound passes overhead.
"Hey Knux, need a hand?," quips Sonic as he jumps from the Tornado, landing with some manner of style on one of the pillars surrounding the altar to the master emerald.
Knuckles turns to look, but realizes his error two seconds too late as he sees the mech's fist come flying off of its arm. The fist soars around Knuckles, trailing a chain, attached to the mech's wrist. Sonic jumps down and Knuckles starts to move, but the chain had already found itself wrapped wholly around the echidna, restricting him completely. Sonic runs to help his friend as a cackle escapes Mecha Knuckles frame and a jolt of electricity is sent down the chain. Knuckles archs back as the electricity courses through his body. When the electricity stops and the chain recedes back into Mecha Knuckles' arm, Knuckles' now unconscious body falls to the ground.
"You bastard!" yells Sonic as he jumps and spin-dashes straight into the mech. The mech, thinking to defend itself, raises an arm, only to find it sliced clean off by Sonic's brutal attack. The mech swings its remaining arm at Sonic, only to punch thin air as Sonic moves behind the metal abomination and kicks it.
-CLANG-
Bad idea, thought Sonic, as he reeled in pain from the strike. Apparently he was going to have to cut this mech to pieces instead of just pulverize it. Mecha Knuckles, already analyzing its situation as futile, starts to retreat. It rockets toward the master emerald in attempt to claim its prize and run away before Sonic could any more damage. Seeing the mech's retreat, Sonic spin dashes after it determined not let it escape. Sonic jumps and spins again and comes in contact with the mech's boosters.
Now unable to fly, the mech continues to move toward the emerald. It could not fail in its mission. The master would not allow it. Before the mech could reach it however, Sonic appeared between it and its prize. In a last ditch effort to obtain its goal, the mech swings back for another punch. Sonic dodges to the side and twists around to see that the fist had kept going. The fist, attached once again by a chain to the mech, soared straight into the master emerald, lodging its spine-blades deep into the object. The mech fires up its secondary boosters, located on the soles of its feet, and rockets itself over the edge of the island. Seeing the obvious result of the action, Sonic jumps at the emerald at shatters it. One large piece remains firmly attached to the mech's had as it returns to its master's body, now plummeting to the ocean below, while the rest lay scattered all over the ground. Sonic gathered as many pieces as he could and placed them on the shrine, hoping that would keep the island from falling all the way to the ground.
Sonic runs over to his now unconscious friend and tries to wake him up. Yelling at him doesn't work and neither does hitting him. Sonic scoops some water out of the shrine with his hands and dumps it on Knuckles' face. Knuckles still lies there, oblivious to the world about him.
"Sonic!" Tails shouts as he emerges from the surrounding forest, "What happened? Whats going on? Wheres the master emerald?"
"What took 'ya so long, Tails?" Sonic replies not answering any of his questions.
"Well it wasn't safe to land the Tornado here, and seeing as how its our only way off the island, I decided to land it on the closest safe area of land. Was that Mecha Knuckles I saw earlier?"
"Yeah it was. He knocked ol' Knux clean out and tried to take the master emerald. I broke it, but he still got most of it. I put what was left on the shrine so the island wouldn't fall all the way, but I don't know if it'll work."
"Does this mean Robotnik is back?"
"I don't know little buddy. I don't know."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A far ways below, a beacon comes to life deep within Mecha Knuckles' chassis. The signal travels far and wide. In a base far, far away a beacon is received.
"Agent 002, it appears Agent 003 was successful in his mission"
"SUBMIT COMMAND"
"Collect the master emerald and whatever remains of Agent 002"
"YES MASTER"
A shadow slinks forward and looks deep into a series of monitors. Each one showing the location of a chaos emerald. The final monitor showing Mecha Knuckles' ruined chassis floating below Angel Island. The finger silently steps back and looks into a monitor showing the surface of Angel Island. Sonic can be seen talking to Tails.
"Sonic," the figure declares, "I will have my revenge and you will suffer!"
